Meta’s influence efforts extend beyond just trying to get individual academics on side. A 2023 TTP report laid out how the company and Zuckerberg’s personal philanthropic efforts have donated hundreds of millions to institutions around the country. techtransparencyproject.org/articles/zucke…
Meta had an internal PR plan to try and discredit Jon Haidt because he was a critic of social media.
Meta was going to recruit academics, like Andrew Gelman, to write take down pieces. They were trying to turn academics against one another through a "whisper strategy".
This is for open academic debate. If academics who share negative evidence about a platform are targeted by campaigns to smear our credibility, we are in deep, deep trouble.
This creates a very serious conflict of interest for anyone who is paid to do this.

Just a few weeks ago, @UN_CTED released a report saying that terrorists are utilizing technology to supercharge their propaganda efforts in a way that is “outpacing” efforts to stop them.
Yet, tech firms are focused on shutting down scrutiny. news.un.org/en/story/2026/…
