Spencer Carbery on how he balances advanced analytics with the eye test and why coaches need to look beyond the numbers:

“I think for more times than not, I don't know the exact percentage I would put on it, not to get too technical, but most times they match up. It's like, But there are times where you're like, ugh, it doesn't feel like that. And then usually that's when you do a deeper dive.

What you have to understand is some of the metrics, so let's just say loose-puck recoveries. Say you're dead last in loose-puck recoveries in the offensive zone. You're like, ooh, that's not very good. We got to recover the puck more in the offensive zone.

So what you can do is now I can go, if I don't really feel that way, I can go see our last 10 games of what they [Sportlogiq] consider a lost loose-puck recovery. So then I can watch them. And sometimes it's like, we had no chance of winning that puck. So that shouldn't be in that category.

But because this is all AI and no one's watching that. So you might go through them and go like, we didn't really lose, because my head goes to we're losing battles on loose pucks. You could watch 100 of them and you're like, 50 of them, we had no chance to win the puck. They just beat us in a race, they had position and they won the puck.

You got to use logic a little bit. I don't overdo it when it comes to the underlying numbers. It's like you can't go crazy and just start going like, this is the gospel, like, this is what we are. You got to take it with a grain of salt and make sure that you're watching.

That's what I've always tried to do, is make sure that I am extremely detailed with what I'm seeing and what I'm cutting and breaking down on the film, and then I can apply the analytics that, that makes perfect sense, because that's exactly what I'm seeing.” #ALLCAPS

Sheldon Keefe when asked if he and his coaching staff have been concentrated on getting Jack Hughes to be a more complete two-way player:

"Yes. It’s essential for us to have success as a team.

He has the ability to impact the game the way he does offensively and with the puck, ion of the game played without it. He plays more than anyone else.

The way I put it to him, we don’t have a chance of being a good defensive team if the guy who plays the most doesn’t commit to that, doesn’t play with a conscience and [isn’t] responsible with the puck.

As our team game has improved, Jack has really been a part of that. That’s what we’re looking for.

At the end of the day, his production is going to come how it’s going to come. He’s been on the ice and scored some empty-net goals, icing games away. Those add to the stats as well, but that’s well-earned by how he’s played and managed throughout the game.

With our best people, the more we get of that, the more we get real traction and consistency in our play. It keeps the accountability chain intact." #NJDevils

"The lack of pace that he felt in the [contract] negotiations is a major reason why he told his teammates and the organization that he wouldn't re-sign and wanted to be traded."
