Hi @Scarlett__Mag, in the @NewStatesman interview, you state that young women are more positive about communism than socialism (& more than men), but I can't find any ref to communism in your data (which shows young men are more positive about socialism). Is this data available?

With respect, this is also a v problematic position: women should be able to want “a bigger welfare state” & also not want children. Welfare programs don’t & won’t shrink primarily bc of low birth rates

We need open ears, not condescension, to confront new gendered polarizations
Great cover story. Deeply depressing.

Good luck to all these left-wing young women who want a bigger welfare state than ever but rule out having children, making that an impossibility!

German real wages saw the sharpest decline since WWII in the 2022 energy crisis & still haven’t recovered. The new energy shock will make things worse. But the German government is once more calling on people to tighten their belts. This is paving the way for the far right.

The people's DOGE: Mamdani scraps $9 million contract with McKinsey
Government must deliver for working people—and every dollar in our budget should work as hard as they do.

That’s why I directed every agency to cut waste and help close our budget gap.

Here’s some of what we found.

Fossil fuel price shocks are redistribution shocks.

Last time, we warned windfall profits would benefit the ultra-rich at the expense of everyone else.

This time, there is no excuse. The numbers are in. We need windfall profit taxes & multilateral price caps now.

I see your excellently thought-out, flawlessly written Substack and raise you my far less polished new Instagram (note: typos/chaotic stories/reels/posts are in fact anti-LLM activism and not because I am a sleep deprived new mum)

My article in RIPE now has an issue number!

It shows how “derisked decarbonization” leads governments to build state capacity where transitions create bankable growth opportunities -- while leaving other crucial sectors (forestry, mining) behind.

my favourite bit of this is how @ZackPolanski has triggered every neoliberal 'the bond markets rule' British commentator into a fit of outrage.

I bet that not one of them can explain what the Bank of England has been doing in the bond market for the past two decades.
.@ZackPolanski on the importance of spending multipliers & borrowing to invest

Zack is, without doubt, a great communicator. And on him talking about democracy & the bond markets I'm reminded of Eddie Dempsey at the Durham Miners Gala when he asked "who elected the bond market?"

.@MkBlyth on why he writes for public audiences 💯 couldn’t agree more

as a much more junior researcher I also find I often get my better ideas when I’m not tethered to the academic article format (& its potential, often scarier readers, no offense)

This is from an interview with Catherine de Vries as part of her wonderful new substack series Etched In Marble, where she interviews econ/pol nonfic writers on writing

(Disclosure: I am speaking to Catherine tomorrow! But I’m genuinely loving the series & questions it provokes)

Back in May I spoke with the excellent Maxine Fowe from @surplusmagazin about green (state) capitalism, unbankable transitions and state capacity 💸

I was giving birth on the day the interview was published (!) so sharing now instead 💚 [In German]
