Denmark had never sent anyone to space. Then came 2 September 2015. 🇩🇰

Copenhagen-born engineer Andreas Mogensen flew a 10-day ESA mission to the ISS.

In 2023 he was back as the first non-US pilot of a Crew Dragon, then commanded the station for over five months.

@ESpaceflight Sad to hear about the possible delays..
For context: the 28 m demonstrator has been at Esrange, about 40 km east of Kiruna and above the Arctic Circle, since June 2025. Its second wet dress rehearsal there wrapped on 29 Sep. The Arctic winter is a real schedule constraint.

@DiscoverFinland @AuroraHunting @OriginalLapland Lovely set. For anyone in Lapland this weekend: NOAA expects a quiet Saturday night (Kp under 2) and a livelier Sunday, up to about Kp 3.7. That far north, clear skies are half the battle.

@digg Both are Finnish: Nokia is based in Espoo, and ICEYE was founded in Finland in 2014. Worth noting it is a letter of intent, signed 22 Oct, with no value or timeline yet. It builds on the LEO satcom pact the two announced on 1 Oct.

Winter is coming to Esrange, and Themis may wait it out. 🇸🇪❄️

ESA's Géraldine Naja said on 22 Oct she is not sure Europe's reusable rocket demonstrator will make its first hop from the Kiruna site this year.

A go/no-go call is due by end of November.
ESA is uncertain whether its Themis reusable rocket demonstrator will fly in 2026, with winter conditions at Esrange threatening further delays.

When the phone network goes quiet, the town still has to talk. 🇳🇴

State-owned Space Norway and Akkodis Nordics signed an MoU in Oslo on 22 Oct: LEO and GEO satellite links plus portable emergency nodes for Nordic municipalities, emergency services, healthcare and utilities.

History 🇸🇪 : In December 2006, Stockholm-born physicist Christer Fuglesang became the first Swede in space, on Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-116).

He made three spacewalks. The third was unplanned: freeing a jammed ISS solar array.

Two more in 2009. Total: 31 h 54 min outside.

@StratcomCentre Context from Finland: ICEYE began in 2014 as an Aalto University spin-off in Espoo and says it has supported Ukraine since 2022. This step is a letter of intent with Nokia, building on the two firms 1 Oct LEO satcom partnership.

Two Finnish names, one sovereign satcom plan. 🇫🇮🇺🇦

Nokia and Finland-founded ICEYE signed a letter of intent with Ukraine's Ministry of Defence on 22 Oct, during PM Petteri Orpo's Kyiv visit.

A start, not a contract: no value or timeline yet. It builds on their 1 Oct LEO pact.
ICEYE and @nokia announced today a partnership with The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine to develop sovereign satellite communications. ICEYE has supported Ukraine since 2022 and delivers sovereign space capability at speed. This builds on that.

🇫🇮 The ICEYE-X36 episode has reached the UN.

At the First Committee on 21 Oct, the US said Russia's Cosmos 2612 manoeuvred dangerously close to a commercial satellite, in a way consistent with on-orbit weapons operations.

X36 is run by ICEYE US, of Finland-founded ICEYE.
As just announced in the @UN First Committee, Russia’s COSMOS 2612 military satellite has been exhibiting threatening behavior by intentionally maneuvering dangerously close to a commercial satellite, behaviors consistent with on-orbit weapons operations. This violates long-established safety thresholds in low Earth orbit. The United States will continue to secure and defend American vital national security interests in, from, and to space.

🇫🇮 FINLAND: Its first Earth-observation satellite weighed 4 kg.

Aalto-1, a CubeSat built mainly by Aalto University students, launched from India on 23 June 2017 with a VTT hyperspectral camera, a radiation monitor and a plasma brake.

Built for two years, it flew far longer.
