“This verdict should not be seen as the end of the chapter, but rather as a beginning of many effective reforms. I still remember the words on the wall of that cage.” My Oped in the NYT about the happy news of our acquittal from the #NGOtrial today. nytimes.com/2018/12/20/opi…

I hope we in the US notice that Brazil, a country of 213 million with a landmass larger than the continental US that also has a federal presidential system, managed to count its votes efficiently in just a couple of hours.

Brazil chose hope over hate, democracy over extremism, and a future that belongs to everyone.
Lula’s victory over far-right Bolsonaro is more than a political triumph. It is a rallying cry for all who refuse to let fear define our future: justice is worth fighting for, democracy neither can endure without accountability, transparency, and the courage of people willing to stand up and act.

Context for problems still facing Brazil even though a Lula victory prevents some immediate emergencies
Why did Lula do so poorly in Brazil’s election — and what does it mean for the global contest between right and left?

💥Netanyahu just posted a picture of an atom bomb over Tel Aviv. "The State of Israel is in real and present existential danger. If the Iranians acquire nuclear weapons, nothing will ever be the same again. Everything is so trivial compared to the existential threat of Iran and taged and fabricated storms [his advisers on the Qatari payroll] that crop up every so often are designed to divert attention from the one thing that matters most: completing the work in Iran.

This touches on the physical existence of every single person here.

We have another two years of Trump to finish the work in Iran, and there's no telling what will come after that—whether it's Kamala Harris or some other mediocre figure.

This is the window of time we have left to complete the necessary work to ensure our physical existence for the coming years. All the required resources of the state must be invested in this mission."

Qatar, Haredim, Urik, conscription, alerts.
It's all one giant smokescreen to hide the single issue that towers above everything else by a wide margin.
If two atomic bombs fall in the center of the country, who will care about all these fake storms?

Future generations will not forgive us if we miss the historic window of opportunity that allows us to try and complete the most critical mission facing our generation.

This won't happen with a prime minister who is held by the throat by the Muslim Brotherhood and terror enablers.

This won't happen with a prime minister who can't pick up the phone and have a continuous, intimate conversation with Trump.

This won't happen with a prime minister who can't withstand the pressure of a TV interview.

The hatred for Netanyahu, as all-consuming as it is for an entire camp, won't help against the Iranian nuclear threat.

Anyone who cares about their own physical existence, that of their family, and their loved ones should have a trembling hand before voting for someone who won't be able to complete the mission, thereby condemning themselves and their family to the danger of a second Holocaust, because of their political hatred or some foolish, insignificant blood libel storm."

Some in Egypt and beyond wonder why Cairo opposes the Turkey–Libya maritime boundary agreement, given that it grants Egypt larger territorial concessions. The simple answer is that this goes far beyond concessions. Egypt aims to link itself to Europe via gas and electricity, but this deal directly bisects that intended route. Consequently, connecting with Greece would force Egypt to seek Turkey's explicit permission, something Cairo firmly refuses to accept.

I understand why @Lana_Nusseibeh is seeking to be UN secretary-general. Ambition. I don't understand why the US or other countries would support her given her role in underwriting mass murder and mass rape in Sudan, in a campaign Trump and Biden both defined as genocide.

Lina Attalah is one of Egypt’s most principled & courageous journalists. On October 27, she goes on trial for running @MadaMasr without a license — a license the outlet has applied for since 2018 & the government has never granted. A conviction could bring heavy fines & the closure of opendent newsrooms.

This is the sixth case against Mada Masr in six years, but the first to reach trial. It comes just weeks after authorities jailed @matsda2sh's entire newsroom & called journalist Rasha Azab in for questioning over her posts. The government is tightening its grip on independent media, & the licensing charge is about punishing journalism it doesn’t like, not paperwork.

ACMER joined 100+ organizations & outlets worldwide in calling on Egypt to drop the charges, license Mada Masr, & free all jailed journalists. Our statement: acmer.us/urgent-global-…

This is a fundamental shift from Iran's prewar posture.

Israeli settlement expansion & settler violence are out of control. The last 3 years saw 50,000 West Bank Palestinians forced from their homes by Israeli military operations, demolitions & settler terror attacks.

Now, dozens of lawmakers led by @JoaquinCastrotx are pushing back.
