Basically, the internet as we know it is incomplete compared to the earlier visions that predate the WWW, which suffers from 3 known issues: (1) content is unstructured and inconsistent (hurting search/discovery, machine readability and organization); (2) content cannot see outside itself (eg what and who references it) (3) no shared social / identity. These stem from the same missing ingredient—hypertext; content sees what links to it—which would allow a complete view of the relations that make the internet and introduce affordances like a shared annotation and curation schemes, structured typing into a universal ontology, and pairing search discovery with a social graph. It was the web was supposed to be. When we talk about the new internet, it really is the old internet, the holy grail vision described by Ted Nelson in the 60’s and animating all internet efforts that came since; 2.0 social networks are a phenomenon that filled missing holes of our incomplete internet. What we’re building simply pieces it all together. This is in the lineage of (and interoperable with) the semantic web movement, which is basically Tim Berners-lee lifelong effort to correct for his WWW failing to be the true internet—federated web eg ActivityPub (Mastodon, Bluesky) is in the most recent notable efforts in the same lineage, but they overindex on the wrong things, and do not complete the graph; we have thought longer and harder about what social actually requires, aren’t shy to deliver it with opinionated design and to compete directly with SNS rather than just pursue another tech experiment, and cover a more complete surface than has been tried yet, a knowledge graph, internet graph and social graph together, as an open wrapper on top of the internet itself. The value is what a complete, structured graph affords, especially relevant in the coming deluge—soon enough you will feel dirty and comfortable ever leaving the walled garden of Remilia, as the unstructured web gets flooded with a thring zombie mob, you will only ever send your own agents to venture out into it, hoovering up everything worthwhile outside, content already deduped into the graph acting as guidelights to map out what isn’t yet.
