The United Kingdom's 15 October statement, shared by @martinplaut, is clear. London opposes action by any party that breaches the border of a neighbouring state, urges urgent de escalation and a return to dialogue, backs the African Union's role, and demands safe humanitarian access and the protection of civilians under international humanitarian law.

That principle must bind Asmara as firmly as Addis Ababa. Ethiopia has told the UN Security Council that Eritrean troops crossed into Tigray, a claim Asmara rejects, while families on both sides of the border pay the price. In Eritrea there is no parliament, no national election and no implemented 1997 Constitution to hold Isaias Afwerki accountable for decisions of war and peace.

The same regime is now in a public dispute with the UK over returns, while young Eritreans keep fleeing indefinite national service. Respect for borders and lasting peace in the Horn require accountable government in Eritrea. @BlueFront90547 offers that path: a peaceful, time limited transition that restores the 1997 Constitution and returns sovereignty to the Eritrean people.

As expected, the TPLF has cut internet and telephone services across Tigray last night, effectively disrupting banking and other essential services. I wonder whether the public was even advised in advance to withdraw cash.

The TPLF has walked straight into another trap set by Abiy. He kept the services open and allowed the TPLF to make the decision to shut them down. Now the TPLF, not the federal government, takes the blame for the potentially disastrous impact on civilians, businesses, and the broader economy. In other words, Abiy has once again turned a measure taken by the TPLF into a political liability for the TPLF itself.

It may be an exaggeration to describe what has happened over the past two days as a “full-blown war.” The TPLF has launched attacks on three of roughly 12 fronts where the two sides have faced each other from entrenched positions for the past six months.
As of this morning, he most intense fighting is taking place along the Raya–Kobo front, where TPLF forces are putting up fierce resistance. This front is crucial for both sides: a major TDF setback there could put greater pressure on its positions further north, including the defense of Mekelle. Conversely, a failure by federal forces to secure gains could prolong their march to capture Mekele and increase pressure on other fronts, widening the conflict in to that ‘full-blown war’.
