Neural niches are recurrent features of human cancer that may relay signals to nearby cells, to the immune system, + to the brain. So what’s in these niches, and what happens when cancer cells barge in? We take a look under the hood in our new preprint 1/ biorxiv.org/content/10.648…

PSA: Stop calling macrophages in tissue M1 or M2. These are not states that exist in biology. The only use of M1 is a macrophage cultured ex vivo with LPS and IFNg; and for M2: IL-4/13/10. Macrophages in tissues are highly complex and diverse and do not resemble either of the ates. M1/M2 language causes confusion and sets the field back. Refer to your macrophages by the molecules they express and the cytokines they make.

Our paper is now out in final form at Nature Genetics! For those who missed the preprint, we used large-scale Perturb-seq targeting transcription factors to push primary fibroblasts into diverse transcriptional states, including those observed in cell atlas studies.

Excited to share our new story in @iScience_CP ! We show how iNKT cells promote CRC-derived liver metastasis by driving the formation of a fibrotic niche. Check it out here:

In our latest preprint, we introduce oncoembryology—a parallel analysis of embryonic development and cancer. With my talented PhD student @TDalessi, we explored the fascinating connections between these two processes.
