The Bucks keep talking about “constraints” in practice. What the heck does that mean?

A closer look at the Constraints-Led Approach, why Taylor Jenkins is embracing it, and how it changes the way Milwaukee practices:

COMPLETE BASKETBALL · THE SPACE LADDER
Add A Player
Coach Tim Brady

Add A Player builds the game one player at a time, from 1 v 1 to 5 v 5, from the same drill start. Each rung adds one attacker and one defender, and the new pair brings one new decision, so players never learn 5 v 5, the help can come from four places, and the players have already seen each one on its own. No passes are drawn, on purpose. The frames show the drive, the help and the movement, and the pass is the player's to find by seeing where the help came from. Off the ball, the cue is the direction of the drive: toward you pushes you, away pulls you, and once the floor is full it turns into the Wheel.

The third page gives three questions for freezes and clips, after Doug Lemov: What's going to happen? And so? Is there an if/then rule? Nothing on the card draws the pass, so the questions are how you find out whether the player saw it.

You don’t need Synergy, Sportscode, or an analyst to build a useful postgame report.

If you have a normal box score, start here:

eFG% = (FGM + 0.5 × 3PM) ÷ FGA

3PT Rate = 3PA ÷ FGA

FT Rate = FTA ÷ FGA

ORB% = ORB ÷ (ORB + Opponent DRB)

TO Rate = TO ÷ Possessions

You can also break down where your points came from:

% from 2s
% from 3s
% from FTs

Now you have a quick picture of:

How you shot
Where your shots came from
If you got to the line
If you created extra possessions
If turnovers hurt you

Especially for high school staffs with limited help, you don’t need to track everything.

You just need a few numbers that actually tell you what happened.

Mark Daigneault never played college basketball lol. Neither did Dusty May. Playing at a high level has never been a prerequisite to being a great coach and player development is just another aspect of coaching
Guys who have NEVER played sports at a high level are training PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES. Lol

‼️ FOUNDATIONAL OFFENSE ‼️

HOLD SPACE

- the tendency under pressure is to flock to the ball. This is counterintuitive. Corner spacing is 🔑 in half court and transition offense.

TEACH DOUBLE GAPS

- this is a universal truth of all offense; double gaps create big advantage BALL HORIZONTALLY

- statistically PPP increases ~ 50% strictly by reversing the basketball (and the residual effects this encompasses).

PAINT TOUCHES

- if you win the paint touch battle you will win > 60% of your games if the talent disparity is comparable.

OBOARDS OR TRANSITION?

- will you steal possessions on the glass or in fast break? Typically this is a core identity of the team you want to become. When the shots aren't falling, extra possessions are CRITICAL.

@ShotTracker studied 12 D1 programs to find the relationship between PPP and ball reversals/paint touches.

Play Calling System

Each set play has a main counter and a backdoor counter

“Chest” = Parent Action
“Chest-Again” = Counter Action
“Chest-Run It” = Backdoor Counter

Become impossible to scout!
