This commonsense bill passed the board of supervisors by a vote of 10 to 1, supported by progressives and moderates alike. Who was the lone dissenting vote? It was Connie Chan, of course, who wakes up every morning to fight against the production of new housing.
The SHADE Act has been passed into law today by Mayor Lurie!

Over the past 10 years, over 2000 units of housing have been blocked or delayed because NIMBYs said the housing would cast a "shadow".

So we're done letting red tape cast shade over our housing future. The SHADE Act adows be used as a basis for environmental appeals. It will save between 3-9 months on some environmental reviews and up to $25,000 per project in reduced staff, consultant, and administrative costs.

We can protect our parks, respect our environment, and welcome more neighbors. We don’t have to choose. It’s time to let housing projects see the light of day.

Thank you to all those who helped turn this into law. My cosponsors Matt Dorsey, Danny Sauter, and Myrna Melgar. My legislative aide Raynell Cooper, all the incredible members of the Planning Department including Lisa Gibson, Lisa Gluckstein, Ryan Shum,Kei Zushi, Tania Sheyer, Debra Dwyer, members of the Mayors Office including Ned Segal and Adam Thongsavat, and our drafting attorney Andrea Ruiz-Esquide.

The fact that the president of the United States has spent a single waking moment thinking about this decadent vanity project should be a source of deep, everlasting shame to anyone who ever supported him.
Good article today from the NYT. I have still yet to hear one good reason why we should get rid of a broad, multi purpose space to satisfy one thing and one thing only. It defies imagination and what PUBLIC space is meant to be.

You backed a guy who has taken us into a bumbling war of choice then obsessed about golf while the country dealt with the fallout. Congrats!

That is not exactly how I remember the Obama presidency, in which he mocked Trump so badly at the WH Correspondents’ Dinner that the guy felt honor bound to actually run for president.

Bill Kristol is basically a social democrat now and CAP is proposing a multi-trillion-dollar health plan last I checked.
obama completely obliterating the bulwark/third way's/cap's "'90s austerity and school vouchers for everyone" plan in a single stump speech

This person has shown up in my feed to defend DC’s poorly written foie gras ban, and is now lecturing an economist about the meaning of DiD. It’s quite a performance.
@ChrisJKennedy @chefjoseandres Difference in difference is very famously not experimental but can tell you what the impact was as though it were an experiment. You like to go off half cocked don’t you? I’ve worked in the food industry in DC for 30 years. I’m a dc native and still work and pay taxes in DC.

Literally talking about doing an experiment on our city. Of course, if she lived here she’d know that we played this game in 2018 and 2022. Out-of-state activists pushed ballot initiatives that fractured our restaurant industry and put people out of work. @chefjoseandres was there, as were many others.
I’ll gladly do the difference in difference analyses after this passes comparing DC to VA and MD to prove this if DC passes I-86.

Vote yes, for science!

Guys, this foie gras ban is so sloppily written that it would ban Jewish delis from selling chopped chicken liver.

Absolutely vote no on this shit.

People who want to campaign on a bill to ban chicken liver are welcome to do so. That’s not how the bill has been presented.
@JHWeissmann Oh no, how horrific! We must do everything in our power to preserve people’s right to *checks notes* eat the fattened livers of industrially raised chickens

Statement of legislative intent is only relevant where text is ambiguous. In this case, the bill explicitly includes chicken products, covers livers of all fattened poultry, and says non-force-fed birds are covered.
@JHWeissmann Less flip, here is the actual legal deficiency with your argument and how someone seriously trying to parse the text would look at it --

Enjoying the mini-uprising against a foie gras ban in DC, based partly on annoyance that in a city with many big problems, it’d devote resources to Pâté Patrol. Yer telling me when gov’t gets expansive & involved in stupid side quests, it ill serves citizens in its core duties?
