The courts have the power to rein in the president's invocation of the Alien Enemies Act.

They cannot stand idly by as the president attempts to misuse claims of national security to justify major abuses.

Good on MI voters for not nominating the sore-loser candidate
HAPPENING NOW: Congresswoman Haley Stevens joins Mike Rogers at church in Detroit this morning.

We have a state to save, Michigan.

Kathy Hochul is an evil woman. The Democratic Party should forfeit her seat because even if she wins, she will be of great consequence to them. Downward spiral for her. She will not escape God’s wrath. She did not denounce evil when she had the chance.

Birthright citizenship exists precisely so you don't have to convince guys like this that you're a "real American."

This is also important: The rich people who have been fear-mongering about Initiative 86 by saying it could ban the sale of "any industrially raised chicken" are doing so not because they honestly believe that but instead because they want to keep eating foie gras.
This is all you need to know about this controversy. If you oppose sticking a pipe down a goose’s throat to force-feed it, vote Yes on Initiative 86. It is really that simple

If your desire to eat foie gras outstrips your concern for ducks, just say that instead of misleading voters about the Initiative's scope and pretending the law wouldn't be interpreted and applied in a reasonable manner.

(Yes, I did read the excellent Hochul profile in the NYTimes yesterday and then watch the mind-boggling video of her walking through NYC with Mamdani)
I can only imagine what it’s like working for Mamdani. Staffing this must be insane, right?

The only other person I remember having this kind of influence was Obama (in my lifetime).

Also the kids. Look at the kids reactions. He’s inspiring the next generation. They love him.

Jordan isn't a lawyer and evidently cannot parse legal text. His stated concern about overbreadth -- that this initiative would ban the sale of basically all fowl in DC -- is misplaced and downstream of his professional limitations.
Guys, this foie gras ban is so sloppily written that it would ban Jewish delis from selling chopped chicken liver.

Absolutely vote no on this shit.

The statement of legislative intent supplementing the "fattened bird liver products" definition, the ejusdem generis interpretive principle, and the rule against absurdity resolve any ambiguity whatsoever about the scope of the prohibition in sec. 4.

Here is, fwiw, Jordan arguing that the undefined term "fattened" in sec. 3(3) is ambiguous. He chooses to resolve that ambiguity as a Trojan Horse for banning all poultry, which of course no reasonable or good-faith interloculator would do.
The issue is that there’s no actual definition of ‘fattened’ in the text. And while the statement of intent talks about duck or goose liver, the text specifically singles out chicken. Grammatically, it actually suggests liver from birds that have been fattened in ANY way, including a high calorie diet, are banned.

The drafting of the sec. 3(3) definition is *obviously* meant to capture efforts by industry to rebrand force-feeding and similar techniques to artificially create fatty livers in poultry.

Is it the best drafting in the world? No. But Jordan's claim about overbreadth is wrong.

I didn't have particularly strong views on foie gras v. meat, generally, so I looked up a video of foie gras production...

Seems bad! Unpleasant! There's a reason force-feeding is considered a form of torture!

Lawmakers/staffers interested in the CIA's post-9/11 torture program, please take note:
@charlie_savage When considering declassification requests, the PIDB takes into account the magnitude of public interest and whether a member of Congress has made a request.

With the NYT, I started fighting in court in 2014 for records from John Durham's investigation of the CIA's post-9/11 torture program. A partial victory at SDNY was overturned by the 2nd Circuit. In 2022, after FOIA law changed, we filed another lawsuit and tried again. /1

YCSE takes --

(1) She definitely committed fraud.
(2) She seems to be a vessel for whatever man she's with, so I'm inclined to believe that Sunny was somewhat more responsible for the fraud.
(3) She's a sociopath who attracts and is romantically attracted to sociopaths.

It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.

To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically.

Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country.

Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case.

Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve.

In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota.

The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.

Christa Pike Discharged From Hospital After Surviving Execution Attempt

Governor Lee must grant both Ms. Pike and all those on death row clemency and commute their sentences. He must also establish an indefinite moratorium on all executions, not just for a few months. The harrowing botched execution must spark a new determination to work to move the state of Tennessee to abolish the death penalty once and for all.
