Some Minnesota police departments are now hiding where their Flock cameras are located. A state database meant to show where automated license plate reader cameras are installed now lists dozens of cameras as “Location Withheld.” @ryanraiche drops his investigation this week.

“Cities are canceling Flock contracts, but the company won’t take them down and sometimes is reinstalling them.”

If only cities had some sort of authority to control who is permitted to install hardware on public property. A “guardrail” of sorts, maybe.

After canceling Flock, citing 4A concerns, Pinal County AZ Sheriff @RossTeeple is now soliciting bids for a replacement ALPR system. When he told Congress “never,” what he apparently meant to say was, “in five weeks.”
Sheriff Ross Teeple on canceling county Flock AI contract: "I will never allow technology to supersede your rights."

The elected officials allowing this to happen need to be put on a timeout.
The Seattle police are getting their very own robot dog.

The base package is $110,000, but the "fully loaded" cost is north of $300,000.

Here's just one example where the same search is attributed to two different agencies. There are many more of this type of discrepancy.

Every time a cop does or does not go to jail for abusing Flock, it's because of these logs.
Not only is it easy to confirm that logs are incomplete, conflict, and change over time, Flock calls having a complete record of all searches a “problem we've solved.”

(1) Flock is not required (or, in most cases, authorized) to replace “lost, stolen, or damaged” hardware. Flock customers have the option of requesting a replacement; (2) Flock doesn't sell hardware, only (re)installation and software services; (3) $3000 is an annual license fee.

“Should Cleveland police continue using Flock license plate readers? The Cleveland Community Police Commission is ... asking for input from residents.”

As I recall, Cleveland showed up in force a few months ago and unequivocally said, “absolutely not.”

2/ The only way privilege could exist here is if the city attorney conducted a criminal investigation into her own client. The county prosecutor and Iowa Attorney Disciplinary Board declined to review.
