DoorDash + Instacart know an alarming amount about how we shop. A merger would put that data – and the technology to exploit it – under one roof.

"It would be obviously illegal and consolidate an alarming amount of surveillance and pricing technology,” @owenslindsay1 told @Reuters.

.@Groundwork is warning that @DoorDash's $17 billion acquisition of @Instacart could give it unprecedented power to hike prices.

Instacart has already tested charging shoppers up to 23% more for identical groceries.

Together, they'd control 77% of U.S. delivery-platform spending.

Halloween candy prices are scary high thanks to Trump's economic policies and corporate profiteering (we're looking at you Hershey's 👀).

“Ultimately, it’s families and it’s kids who suffer because Halloween is really all about them, or should be,” @EmDiVito told @HuffPost.

Tech is fueling price gouging.

Prices are on the rise, and according to the author of "Gouged: The End of a Fair Price—and What That Means for Your Wallet", @owenslindsay1, CEO of the Groundwork Collaborative, that's not just due to inflation and other market pressures.

Lindsay sat down with Beter Life Lab's Haley Swenson to discuss how new technologies are allowing price gouging on an unprecedented scale. So how do we fight to keep essential services and goods affordable? Owens has a few ideas.

Americans should be able to book a flight, order a ride, or walk into their grocery store and know that the price they see is the same price their neighbor sees.

It's past time to give American consumers a peek into these companies' pricing black boxes.

Adam's playbook for merger reviews is to just pay for the competitive analysis he wants.
I get that Groundwork's schtick is to find Surveillance Pricing under every rock -- but merger reviews hinge on competitive analysis, not vibes.

Corporations are getting called out for using technology to set personalized prices & squeeze more money out of consumers.

Some insist they're pricing products, not people.

If that's true, they should have no problem opening their pricing black boxes to the FTC.

oh good, so customers will get to choose between Instacart-DoorDash’s surveillance pricing or Walmart’s surveillance pricing. what robust competition!
Calling DoorDash-Instacart a grocery monopoly only works if you leave out Walmart, the biggest online grocer in America (~37%), now offering 30-minute delivery in 33 markets. Local grocers need scale to compete with that, and this deal could help.

NEW: The FTC is ordering 9 companies, including DoorDash, Instacart & Walmart, to disclose how they use personal data to set prices.

We've repeatedly exposed gaps between what companies tell consumers & what they reveal to investors & in patent filings.

A grocery company that experiments on shoppers to see how much it can overcharge them is merging with a delivery company that tracks their every click and scroll to do the same.

Two of America's biggest ripoff machines should not become one.

The FTC must block this merger.
