“I think you'll see more clubs going down this route. We've seen it recently with a lot of American owners in Scotland trying to come here and take over and it's not always had the success that they hoped for. I think further down the line you're going to have these people thinking, ‘I've tried to have my fun, and it's not quite worked out, it's time to go’.

Ten years of fan ownership in Scotland - could Celtic and Rangers follow suit? || Graeme McGarry

"It will never work. The club doesn’t have a large enough supporter base. We’ll never be able to compete.

"Those who were at the vanguard as the concept of fan ownership was football have heard all of this, and many other doubts around the viability of the model, before. Ad nauseam. And yet, a decade on from Motherwell becoming the first majority fan-owned top-flight club in Scotland, the Fir Park outfit are thriving with the Well Society as their main shareholder, embedded more deeply than ever in their community, and coming off the back of one of their most successful Premiership campaigns in living memory.

"That success story is not unique to Motherwell, though. There are now four clubs in the Scottish Premiership showing that fan ownership is no limit to ambition, or to how competitive a side can be put out on the field of play.

"Were it not for the intervention of their supporters and the Foundation of Hearts back in 2013, as club legend and then manager Gary Locke has starkly outlined, there might not be a Hearts today at all. Now, the Tynecastle club are the largest fan-owned club in the country, while on the field, they came within minutes of winning the title last season.

"St Mirren, meanwhile, were the first fan-owned club in Britain to win a trophy when they picked up the League Cup last season, while Falkirk more than consolidated their back-to-back promotions to reach the top-flight by finishing in the top six last term.

"All of that is, in the view of Derek Watson, current Well Society chair, cause for celebration. And on Saturday evening in Glasgow, that is just what he and many others from all of those clubs will be doing." 👇

Have you been as annoyed as me about the new rule that forces players off for 60 seconds if they need treatment, simply because they haven't had a bookable offence committed upon them? Then you might enjoy this rant/column...
💬 "This is a daft, dangerous rule, and one that must be dispensed with immediately."

Players and teams are now being punished for picking up legitimate injuries. IFAB's 60 second rule is unjust, risks players refusing treatment, and should be binned.

The new 60 second rule for injured players is a well-meaning attempt to crack down on time wasting and play acting.

In practice, however, it’s daft, unjust, and maybe even a bit dangerous.

Man City scandal tip of the iceberg as football erodes from the top || Stephen McGowan

"In Scotland people know how toxic the stench of scandal can be. Fourteen years have passed since Employee Benefits Trusts and side letters entered the national vocabulary and Rangers fell The bitter scars from those events still weep, angry and raw.

"Former Ibrox chairman Sir David Murray popped up on the podcast Graeme Souness Tackles the other week to rouse sleeping dogs from their slumber.

"Murray used his recent autobiography to appeal to Rangers supporters to remember him only for the good times. He was pushing the same line on the podcast, telling old mucker Souness that the Ibrox club were ‘targeted’ by an HMRC witch hunt.

“'It hurts me very badly,' said Murray. 'Okay, I’m remembered for the end, but I would like to think I’m remembered for Laudrup, Gascoigne and 35 trophies.'

"A bit like the captain of the Titanic asking people to remember him for a smooth push-off at Southampton, Murray knows better than anyone why HMRC used Rangers as a high-profile test case.

"EBT arrangements were used between 2001 and 2010 as a form of disguised remuneration to avoid tax and national insurance contributions on player earnings. In 2017 even he had to admit that EBTs and the non-disclosure of side letters to the SFA or the SPL gave Rangers the ‘opportunity to get players that we perhaps would not be able to afford”.

"While some still get misty eyed over Gazza and nine-in-a-row, then, plenty of Rangers fans blame the former owner for Craig Whyte, administration, Charles Green, Mike Ashley, liquidation, Sevco, Duff and Phelps and the recurring issues which led to just three trophies in 14 years. That’s David Murray’s legacy right there." 👇
