Vision-Based Planning is when the rules follow the vision. Not: the rules create awful buildings with low quality units with massive carbon demand to cool the idiotic design (spend 2 days in a glass tower in Vancouver that is not built for their summers and you will be a believer in passive design)
Beauty is so incredibly important. One of the cruel ironies is that massing requirements and other efforts to “require beauty” often backfire and prevent the traditional styles many people love most.

Parking minimums are just mandatory housing for cars
The People Over Parking Act went into effect on June 1, removing minimum parking requirements within 1/2 mile of rail stations and transit centers and within 1/8 mile of most fixed transit routes. In Chicago, that covers virtually all the areas where people live and do business

The point about beautiful places and buildings is never that they MUST be classical or vernacular or Gothic or Art Deco but that patterns of harmonious ornament, coherent complexity, colour, detail, biomorphic (i.e. natural) forms etc are consistently more popular with more people

Design for new apartments in Zurich, by Studio Esch Rickenbacher Architektur

As is often the case, each core (stair and elevator) serve two homes per floor. That means all apartments are dual aspect, with great access to light and cross ventilation. Plan is good (not perfect!)

I'm a huge advocate for urban greenery. Paris has transformed the once concrete-covered Place de Catalogne into a green oasis by planting 470 trees. With summer temperatures regularly reaching 35°C, more shade and less concrete is exactly what cities need. A wonderful ty can do the same by the way. Demand action!

Barcelona’s Superblocks are one of the world’s most influential urban transformations. In a city where cars take 20% of trips but 60% of public space, they offer a radical proposition: what if streets were designed not as conduits for traffic but as extensions of living rooms?🧵

San Francisco has about 2,000 privately owned vacant lots, under 1% of its parcels, and many can’t host homes because of zoning or shape.

A Terner Labs analyst says the city must also replace some existing buildings to ease its shortage.
