here's the entirety of the seeming mental breakdown Haley Stevens just had on CNN. One of the most bizarre and incoherent political interviews I can recall. Note how she's completely unable to explain why she changed her mind from supporting Abdul El-Sayed last night to endorsing Mike Rogers today.

#Chiefs K Harrison Butker missed a 54-yarder wide right with 2:36 left, giving Denver amazing field position to go down and take the lead.
Butker is now 2/7 from 50+ yards this season and has missed 16 FGs since last season, the most of any NFL kicker.

You guys in love with Israel should just move there. This man was a military doctor who saved the life of a US senator. The way you people talk about Muslims is disgusting. Don’t import your apartheid here.
Jaw-dropping piece from a great reporter about a congressional candidate who has managed to keep his Islamist radicalism on the down low. Read it and learn.

“That doesn't mean we should assume that the USA will act morally on the world stage in the future. Deep down, they simply don't care very much.”
Yes, that is the fundamental issue.
Yes, that is the fundamental issue.
Although people all over the world are happy to see Trump and MAGA becoming unpopular in the USA, the reason behind it is far less encouraging.
Trump could support Putin and Russia all he wanted. He could continue to let Ukrainians get slaughtered, treat Canada like shit, threaten Denmark with war, steal from Venezuela to line his own pockets, support Israel's brutality, and insult allies day after day. The American public doesn't support these things, but they don't seem to care very much about them either.
The only reason people are now turning against Trump is because — of all unimportant things — gas has become a little bit more expensive in in a country wealthier than any other in world history. THAT is what infuriates the average voter and makes them turn against Trump
The rest of the world is lucky that this is happening, as it weakens Trump. But that doesn't mean we should assume that the USA will act morally on the world stage in the future. Deep down, they simply don't care very much.

Among Catholics who rarely attend Mass, solid majorities favor abortion "as a matter of choice."
It drops below a majority among weekly attenders.
However, the data indicates that weekly Mass goers are slightly *more* supportive of abortion in 2024 vs 2014.

The disgusting and frankly racist way Haley Stevens uses Black voters as a prop in her demented and deluded power game is emblematic of a much bigger centrist Dem problem. It is utterly despicable across the board.

repeat it again and again and still it's a lie
Here the thing on Michigan: This is all on El-Sayed. He has never, ever condemned antisemitism and Israel hate. Never. He just hasn’t. And he’s had a million opportunities to do so. He would easily condemn racism against black people. But not antisemitism against Jews. El-Sayed may still win, but he’s the reason this race is super close. He’s the reason black and Jewish voters in Michigan won’t vote Democrat this year. This is all on him.

One of the finest political performances I’ve seen in a long time. And a masterclass in leadership. He tamed this situation and made it work for him and Michigan. In the end, Haley’s backstab probably helped him.
El-Sayed: I have a sense that you all are here today because of the decisions of somebody who's not here right now. I'm just going to tell you, this is a state of 10 million people who deserve a lot better from their government. I'm a lot more focused on the 9,999,998 that are re talking about
I'm not in the business of driving clicks for you. I'm in the business of trying to solve problems for the people of my state

This is a tough one to process. He had been in and out of the hospital during the summer, but it still hurts to realize that the winningest left handed pitcher in the history of the New York Mets, their greatest “money pitcher”, the man who won two games in the 1969 World Series including the clinching game five, and always the life of the party is gone. What an honor to have known him and called him a friend. He was as tough as they come. Rest easy, number 36. You will be missed, but lovingly remembered. RIP.
We are saddened to share the news that Jerry Koosman has passed away. We send our thoughts and prayers to his family.

In Tel Aviv for @TheAtlantic this week and I've noticed two big shocks among Jewish Israelis invested in liberal democracy: first, they are a minority, and second (more hopeful) that the only path to political power is a new sort of Arab-Jewish coalition.

I spoke with Haley Stevens yesterday.
Feeling a bit absurd in pointing out the obvious and being far kinder than I should have been, I reminded her that the outcome of this senate race will be viewed in the light of a future Supreme Court vacancy, and I expressed a hope that all of us understand the stakes.
She assured me she's supporting Dr. El-Sayed, sent me a video of a recent speech she gave blasting Mike Rogers and said this: "Still stands. I promise."
She also said she's been sending this video to other folks to make it clear where she stands on this race.
Again: that was yesterday.
I have known Haley Stevens for years. I have counted her as a friend and an ally. We've had many thoughtful conversations about this country, and she has never failed to remind me that her mother is a fan of my writing.
Whatever other political differences we have, she has always made it clear to me she would stand with LGBTQ people. It was a red line she refused to cross.
Instead, she has made the inexplicable decision to endorse a man who views LGBTQ Americans as second-class citizens unworthy of full equality.
I can't help but wonder what her mother must be thinking right now.
I have no idea what has happened to the person I thought I knew, but clearly, she has completely taken leave of her senses in endorsing a Republican who is little more than a Trump sycophant -- less than 24 hours after promising me that she has not wavered from the bigger picture.
I am disgusted with her cynicism and cowardice in this moment. God forgive me for trusting her.
If you're a Michigan voter and as disgusted as I am, get to your polling place and vote for Dr. El-Sayed.

“Pope Leo XIV, who has clashed with the Trump administration over the war in Iran and immigration policy, hardly fits this mold of ‘high T’ Christianity. He’s calm and reserved, and often seeks compromise over conflict. But it would be a mistake to misjudge Leo as soft. He’s actually the tough guy here.”

Commandant of Auschwitz Rudolf Höss being escorted to the gallows for his execution, 1947.
Four days before he was executed, Höss acknowledged the enormity of his crimes in a message to the state prosecutor:
My conscience compels me to make the following declaration. In the ell, I have come to the bitter recognition that I have sinned gravely against humanity. As Commandant of Auschwitz, I was responsible for carrying out part of the cruel plans of the 'Third Reich' for human destruction. In so doing I have inflicted terrible wounds on humanity. I caused unspeakable suffering for the Polish people in particular. I am to pay for this with my life. May the Lord God forgive one day what I have done. I ask the Polish people for forgiveness. In Polish prisons I experienced for the first time what human kindness is. Despite all that has happened I have experienced humane treatment which I could never have expected, and which has deeply shamed me. May the facts which are now coming out about the horrible crimes against humanity make the repetition of such cruel acts impossible for all time.

After the Second World War, the German theorist Hannah Arendt suggested that totalitarianism takes root in societies where lots of people feel unnecessary or unwanted. In the years after 2016, it was common for the media to report on underemployed people in the Rust Belt who felt side. Today, manosphere ideology rages against a society that, allegedly, claims not to need men, and young people wonder whether there’s room for them in an A.I.-saturated workforce. “We have a real need to be needed,” Joshua Rothman writes. “And yet many forces—thinking machines, aging, economic and social dislocation—appear to be making us feel redundant.” Read his latest column: newyorkermag.visitlink.me/P4Wel9
