i initially thought @FreedomFactory was building an ethereum phone
looking closer, there are three separate pieces: ethOS, dGEN1 and PQ1
understanding what each does makes the whole project more interesting
โ ethOS: the software
this is where the onchain experience lives: pps and transaction confirmations
its latest update adds Transaction Guardian, an on-device AI that reads wallet requests and flags potential risks before approval
it also includes AndyClaw, an agent that can operate apps, with a live view and controls to stop it
โ dGEN1: the everyday device
dGEN1 brings that software into dedicated hardware
one distinctive feature is its secondary terminal screen, which displays transaction information and lets users confirm through a fingerprint or swipe
the product question here is whether bringing wallet interactions into the device itself makes using crypto meaningfully easier
โ PQ1: the separate hardware signer
PQ1 takes a different role
Freedom Factory designed it around post-quantum signatures, using SPHINCS+C10 through an ERC-4337 smart account, alongside on-device transaction decoding
that is a different security architecture from simply installing a wallet on a phone
my takeaway:
Freedom Factory is working on both sides of self-custody: making onchain activity easier to use, and changing how transactions are checked and signed
the pieces have distinct jobs
the next thing i want to see is how well they work together in practice, especially when users move between everyday activity and long-term custody

How do you prove a hardware wallet has no hidden code on it?
Fill every byte of its memory with random junk. Unplug it. Ask for all of it back.
If all 2 MB come back exactly, there was no room left for anything else.
Built this for the PQ1 this week ๐

Your hardware wallet shouldn't need the website to be honest.
The PQ1 takes the raw @CoWSwap order, rebuilds it on the device, and shows you the actual trade.
If anything doesn't match, it won't sign ๐

Quantum is an institutional problem first.
Funds, DAOs and foundations hold the longest. And they take the longest to change anything.
You can migrate your own wallet in an afternoon. A treasury needs signers, a vote and a policy review.

For money, I want the most boring cryptography there is.
That's why the PQ1 signs with hash-based SPHINCS+.
To forge a signature, you have to break SHA-256. Nothing else.

Neither secure chip in the PQ1 knows your seed.
There are two of them, from two different companies: an Infineon OPTIGA and an NXP SE050.
Each holds a share. And one share alone is worth exactly zero ๐

2 weeks until you can see the PQ1 in person :)
@mhaas_eth and @nceornea_eth will be in Mumbai from the 2nd to the 6th and talking about the PQ1 on and off stage at Devcon.
DM us if you'll be there!

I keep saying this and people keep pushing back. So once more:
An EVM upgrade won't save your ETH from quantum computers.
Even if Ethereum ships post-quantum signatures at protocol level tomorrow, your coins still sit behind an ECDSA key.
Everyone, individually, has to move.

"Open source hardware wallet" has a gap most people never think about.
You can read the code on GitHub.
But how do you know that's the code running on your device?
On the PQ1, the device tells you. In 8 words ๐

if you're going to buy a hardware wallet you should probably buy a PQ1 from freedomfactory.io
(shout out @nceornea_eth and @mhaas_eth)
if you're going to build one, build a @wedgiedev
(and technically i will ship you one from wedgie.dev)

I put the exact same @CoWSwap order on a Ledger and on a PQ1.
The Ledger showed me a hash.
The PQ1 showed me the trade.

Same Safe transaction. Two hardware wallets.
Ledger: "Domain hash. Message hash." That's it.
PQ1: @base, the Safe, the recipient, exactly 900 USDC.
One of them makes you sign blind. Watch ๐
