Three ways Britain can get out of this mess.
But why I’d choose the fourth.
Many people ask me what the problems with the UK are and how I’d fix them.
We’ve drafted a 53 page report detailing much of this as well as solutions.
Likely the most comprehensive piece we have ever put out.

We’re not looking to change minds, but we certainly want you to think.
Special thanks to @DamianPudner, @alexanderrX_ and @alangreenspaan for their proof-readings and suggestions.

British journalism is the only place where a someone gets something wrong or does something poorly, putting the profession into disrepute and all the other journalists come to defend them just because they’re a journalist.

Even if they’re at different firms, they’ll still come to back them.
And there’s no excuse for getting things wrong when you have journalists like @EdConwaySky who go to the effort of understanding almost everything they’re talking about, or the guys at Bloomberg like @John_Stepek or @matt_levine
But no, when it comes to the BBC, they will jump to defend their own, and other marginal journos from unknown publications also join in.

Define windfall profit from normal profit?
Nope, that’s not how taxes and price works. The price is determined by demand and supply.
Companies charge the highest price they can given demand. A tax levied on *profits* does not affect a company’s cost ie supply.
Taxes on *windfall* profits (like oil and gas) are the most efficient kind of tax there is.

FT comments never miss.
I don’t think I’ve read such a rational analysis of the situation we’re in for a long time.

I've been in France since 2002 and have never seen the streets so violent nor the politics so extreme. From the sacking of the supermarket on my street to the prospect of Présidente Le Pen, here's me @FT including thoughts from 2 French Nobel laureates as.ft.com/r/addcad57-0f9…

18 years since the GFC and we're £12k a head short of where the old trend had us.
And 981k young people still not working or learning, same as 2008.
Brilliant

So it turns out that Ukraine's issues with Starlink were caused by Ukraine.
Starlink terminals disconnected at speeds above 160 KPH, as determined by the Starlink terminals internal GPS.
To get around this, Ukraine hacked the Starlink terminals to think they were stationary regardless of speed.
SpaceX figured this out, and updated the system software to detect excessive speed by seeing how rapidly the terminal switched from on satellite to another. This broke Ukraine's hack, and Starlink would no longer work at high speeds.
Ukraine was using Starlink in a way that violated the terms of service.
Starlink figured it out and stopped it.

People looking for ‘free’ alternatives to TradingView shouldn’t be trading because you clearly have no money.
TradingView is like 1/5th the cost of a fucking ICE feed per month.
How I know you’re not serious.

@cryptotrice @openmarket_xyz Also, whatever app they ask their users to download isn't safe either. If anyone wants to use a good alternative to TV, they should try Reversed Premium from GitHub. All the way

I would be pro a ban on opening short term trading accounts if you don’t have $100,000 as a standing facility tbh.

Just a reminder that these people are part of the British electorate.
This is what you’re up against.

Everyone who keeps sharing these short interest charts is missing the flows behind them. Most shops are not taking outright short bets. This is another effort to ease margin requirements across the street: banks providing balance sheet for more speculative bets are asking clients sure.
The sequence on the street looks like this:
HF manager: “I want more margin.”
Bank: “Things look risky in public AI bets, and we’re already lending a lot against private AI bets. For some clients, we’ll extend more financing, but only if they add more short exposure to improve their collateral scores.”
HF manager: “Okay, I’ll short more stock against my main bet.”
That is how you end up with short exposures that look astronomically high while many end users remain heavily long tech. The additional shorts are supporting the financing of their main bets.
Which also tells the bigger story on why raw equity financing rates haven’t blown out the way they did ahead of the big SpaceX IPO in June, despite the fact that lending is slowing.

‘Mass General Brigham (the largest hospital system in Massachusetts) reported roughly $1.75 billion in income from investments for fiscal year 2025 (ending 30 September), with total investment activity contributing about $2.2 billion toward its overall results.’

My favorite is the “portfolio manager” who makes almost $3MM per year.

BREAKING
The Treasury’s entrepreneurship adviser has announced she is quitting.
Alex Depledge tells my colleague @hannahprevett start-ups are treated as a “sideshow” and a “nice to have”.
“Entrepreneurship can’t be seen as a good news bonus on the margins of economic policy. That mentality is really dangerous for British business as a whole…”
Depledge due to leave her role on Thursday, the day after the Budget.
