If every wedding was like this the divorce rate would be 0%

This is rootless pessimism. Computers have outdone humans at chess for decades and people are more interested in chess than ever before, AND more people make money from chess than ever before.
Math is in the fucking news! When’s the last time that happened?

Reading the comments of junior mathematicians confirms what many senior mathematicians have been warning about over the past month:
It is becoming clear that people with the intellectual ability to understand these proofs will not be interested in spending their lives training to check LLM logs.
This is the tragic side of what is happening that almost no one — except the actual mathematicians — seems to get.
Either we figure out how to keep people interested in doing mathematics, or in 20 years LLMs will have no one’s work left to recombine into new proofs, and no one interested in reading those proofs.
That would be the thermal death of mathematics.
The argument that “LLMs will read LLM math” is so shortsighted that it makes me want to cry…

Technology is often just leverage. People with no energy or curiosity will not benefit from AI, but that’s their problem.
The flaw of this is most people just don't have interesting enough lives for an agent to engage with. They go to work. They go home. They buy a few things. They have a day on the weekend to walk around the block. They take a trip once a year
There's not much slack there. What's the agent going to do

If it does the ‘go to work’ part for me, I can handle the rest. But work isn’t going anywhere, it will just be new and (for most people) more satisfying. Hunt/gather —> farm —> industry —> office —> whatever we are heading to.

It’s not about supporting this guy, so much as being in total opposition to the people who would sentence someone to prison for memes
Back in 2019 I read a news article about a young politician being elected into the Belgian parliament. The article presented him as cultured, intelligent, well-read and a music lover, who wanted to fight for a better Europe and a better Belgium. After that, as so regrettably happens even with the best of intentions, I fell out of touch with Belgian politics. A few years later I came across the young man again, on here, and we had a few interesting conversations about the future of Europe.
As usual, I ended with a warning that he should be careful about associating with me because I am what is considered in Europe, a reactionary. He dismissed my concerns as a perfect gentleman, and told me that he was about to be sentenced to a year in prison for having been a member of a group chat where someone posted a meme of some sort.
Belgium today obviously doesn't deserve young men like Dries Van Langenhove, but they need a thousand more of him. Desperately. I support him, and even if you don't, the whole idea of politics and democracy depends on people being able to freely speak their mind. We need more people with his kind of courage.

I asked for broscience and got three responses:
-There are few benefits
-There are benefits to individuals but harms to society
-There is nothing but benefits
-There are few benefits
-There are benefits to individuals but harms to society
-There is nothing but benefits
@simonsarris Vague but sincere question - do you think the benefits of factory farmed / hormone filled meat - call it spiritually bankrupt meat - outweigh the downsides? Open to bro science here, and I mean it as more of a health than an ethics question.

Gathering the right context and data to feed AI is still a pretty big task in the standard American office. Getting information out of people’s heads and getting data pipelines to the right place is probably a safe job for at least a few years.
There's nothing kind about letting good people live in a fantasy world that no longer exists. You have to tell them, even if it hurts. Because the sooner they accept reality, the sooner they can adapt to the future.

This question bothers me the more I read it. It contains a very insidious form of dishonesty, where you imply a general point by asking a specific question. But the magnification keeps details out of the frame which affect the general image.
I notice none of Nikole Hannah-Jones' critics try to answer to the basic question she wrestled with, which is: Why should my daughter get to go to a better school than other people's kids just because I work for the New York Times?

If food is scarce, how do you as a parent justify feeding your child instead of other random kids?
