When will governments stop being so gutless and stupid and finally legislate to control this insane AI race? Even if it doesn't result in human annihilation, the harms are likely to outweigh the benefits
“You just said that 10% doesn’t seem an unreasonable estimate that AI could kill all humans”
“Yes”
“Wow… oh my God.”
@vicderbyshire speaks to Nobel Prize Winner and so-called ‘Godfather of AI’ Geoffrey Hinton about predictions by an Anthropic researcher that there’s a more d kill all humans within a decade.

I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

Do you know who this student might be? We are trying to trace the identity of this part-Māori student, who attended the University of St Andrews in the 1860s.

I duscuss this amazing event and the threats from future solar super storms in my forthcoming @penguinrandom book #Solar - A History of Humanity and the Sun. 2027
The Night the Sun Almost Fried the Victorian World
On 1–2 September 1859 the Sun threw a tantrum so violent that Earth has not seen its equal in the written record. We call it the Carrington Event, after the English astronomer Richard Carrington, who watched a patch of the Sun de in a matter of minutes.
Seventeen hours later the shock arrived.
Compasses spun. Telegraph networks—the internet of the 1850s—went feral. Operators yanked wires from batteries and still watched sparks leap across the keys. Some stations kept sending messages on the residual current alone. Paper caught fire. Operators got shocks. In the dark, auroras painted the sky blood-red and green as far south as the Caribbean and Hawaii. Gold miners in the Rockies stood up at midnight thinking dawn had come.
What hit Earth was a fast, dense coronal mass ejection—a billion-ton cloud of magnetized plasma—slammed into the planet’s magnetic field and crumpled it. The resulting geomagnetic storm induced currents in long conductors: telegraph lines then, power grids and satellites now.
Carrington’s flare was not unique in kind. It was unique in how hard it hit a world that had just wired itself together and had no idea the Sun could answer back.
A repeat today would not stop at flickering lights. It would threaten transformers, GPS, radio, and the thin electronic nervous system of modern life. NASA and others simulate that scenario because September 1859 is the benchmark: the strongest geomagnetic storm we can point to and say, this actually happened.
Simulation credit: NASA. The Sun’s still out there. It has not promised to wait another 167 years.

Put August 12 in your phone now. Genuinely.
Before sunrise, six planets spread across the sky. Afternoon, the eclipse. After dark, the Perseids Meteor shower.
Four events on one day, NASA says, and the new moon that same date keeps the sky dark enough to actually see the d a telescope for most of it. A field, a coat, and twenty minutes for your eyes to adjust.

DON’T FORGET TO LOOK UP; on August 12, 2026, there will be a total solar eclipse, along with a peak of the Perseid meteor shower and also a rare alignment of six planets will all occur on the same day.

It’s #SunDay! Here’s your space weather report for the week of Feb. 6 - 12:
•9 M-class flares
•1 C-class flare
•30 coronal mass ejections
•0 geomagnetic storms
This video from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) shows the week’s activity.
After a very “eruptive” last d back down a bit. The active region responsible for last week’s torrent of flares — AR4366 — still produced all of this week’s M-class flares, but has not produced any more X-class flares so far. It rotates off of the Sun’s Earth-facing disk about half-way through the video.

This is hands down my favourite #SolarFlare in recent years, an event from September 2024. The flare persisted for several hours, giving us a jaw-dropping view of ‘coronal rain’ (seen in the yellow structure) and ‘supra-arcade downflows’ (seen in the cyan structure). A beauty!
