The people who work in games know.
@DougTenNapela means to an end, a tool, and it's absolutely a god send for an indie developer right now. Been making games for 25 years myself, and still enjoy doing the art, but now creation moves at the speed of a prompt, and it's empowering.
... And I love Earthworm Jim! What a masterpiece that game was. Christmas of 93 and we were broke AF, My girlfriend spent her last dollars to get me two games i really wanted, Earthworm Jim and Donkey Kong Country. I only asked her to choose one, but she got me both. I'll never forget that, it was a very impactful moment in my life, contributed me becoming a developer.

Will parents have to be notified that a cancer cure uses Ai before they will use it on their son? Will they get public backlash for curing their child using Ai over letting him die by traditional means?
Anti-Ai people are in a cult. If you have to know an artist’s methods before you decide if his art is good, you don’t really love art.
I don’t understand why people are more in love with doctor’s tools, artist’s methods and director’s extra features than the thing they produce. I actually liked my video games, not just working on them using our intentionally-primitive analogue methods.
Speaking of process, did you hear the one about the butcher who backed into a meat grinder and got a little behind in his work?

Tim Sweeney is criticizing Valve again over Steam’s requirement for developers to disclose their use of generative AI.
The Epic Games CEO called the policy “abhorrent,” arguing that developers are being forced to make a “political statement” that could be used against them by a s been criticizing the policy since 2025, previously comparing the disclosure to a “Scarlet Letter” and arguing that AI will eventually be part of almost every game production process.

That’s the spirit. Having it help you with writing will get you to write. Millions of people are being more creative if for no other reason than they have a little kick in the pants to try.
@DougTenNapelraphic designer for 26 years, and now I'm writing my first novel with the help of AI. Something I've wanted to do for ages but never had the patience to get all my thoughts on paper.
The process has been exhilarating! Turns out, I've got a wild imagination and a knack for worldbuilding. Dialogue? Well, that's another story.
ChatGPT (or Alfred, as I call him) has been a creative godsend, helping me turn years of scattered ideas into something tangible. I can't wait to see where this adventure leads.
And the best part? I get to hire myself to design the book cover and illustrations. I hear my rates are very reasonable.

It seems the people old enough to remember what digital did to analogue have seen this hysteria before. I was one of the ones raging against Photoshop in my youthful ignorance.
To replace animators who can sculpt faces with ones that just replace printed heads actually makes sense just from a practical standpoint. You can find way more great puppet-animators who can move the model more than you can find great puppet-animators who can move the model and sculpt the face on every frame.
But it goes even farther than that... I have trained and worked with many great stop motion puppet artists who can't draw at all. Imagine being an animator who can't draw. But when you repose a physical puppet, you don't have to be able to maintain a characters volume in 2D drawings to make its volume believable because the physical puppet doesn't suddenly change volumes between frames. But you can find a lot more puppet animators who can't draw than you can find puppet animators who can draw. You just replaced the drawers who more skilled animators but less skilled draftsmen.
Ai allows people who can't draw at all, or even do puppet animation timing to simply tell a story. Saying they have to be able to draw instead of using Ai is like saying a puppet animator must draw instead of repose a puppet. It's arbitrary.
Directors of live action don't have to tell an actor when to blink, when to gesture, how many frames per second his walk cadence must be, but that's what drawing animators do on every scene. It would be absurd to say that a director isn't really directing if he isn't micro-controlling every live action actor at 24 frames per second.
The anti-Ai philosophy is grounded nowhere in our tradition or practices in mass media story telling. It's arbitrary protectionism and hysteria at best. It's actually kind of mean.

Absolutely right. It’s the same old song, but a new verse. I lived through this exact backlash when Photoshop, Illustrator, and digital fonts hit the scene.
Same overreactions, same purity tests, same warnings that real art was dead.
Some jobs did change. But art didn’t die, and those tools are simply how the work gets done now.
Knight’s take sounds reasonable until you ask who decides where “amplifying” ends and “replacing” begins.
As @DougTenNapel points out, Laika’s own 3D printers replaced hand sculptors. So why is that line drawn right after the tools he already uses?
Intended or not, it keeps the door shut for anyone without a studio budget.
Technology is like fire. It can be a frightening master or a powerful servant. But you don’t get to decide which one if you refuse to pick it up.

I agree and the sheer spectacle of stop motion animation is worth seeing and a valid form of entertainment, even if the story is thin.
@DougTenNapel Agreed! Wildwood still looks great though. Can’t wait to see it.

The only marriage feminists get excited about are the ones that smuggle foreigners into the country. Otherwise, they despise marriage as an insitution.
WOW! Ilhan Omar’s sister’s marriage certificate has been obtained by the NY Post, and it lists her father’s name as NUR SAID ELMI
Which matches her “EX-HUSBAND’S” name of Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, and Ilhan’s REAL name, Ilhan Nur Said Elmi
She CANNOT dig herself out of this one.

They use 3D printers to make faces using technology that removed art jobs of animators who hand-sculpted every face. They used technology on Wildwood that replaces hundreds of jobs just by using digital cameras, sound and editing.
It’s not a principle even Knight believes. We all want to use our technology and create a moral absolute out of where our mere taste drew a line.
George Pal hand carved wooden figures in different states of animation instead of using poseable armatures covered in latex. He was not doing something morally better than Ray Harryhausen or Pixar… or Ai.
This is yet another form of Pharisee self-righteousness. The judgement of Ai is not new, it draws on something very old.

“Wildwood” director Travis Knight calls AI an “amazing piece of technology” but says, “I’m not embracing it at all.”
“I see technology as a tool, and we use technology at Laika. A pencil is technology, a paintbrush is technology, a 3D printer is technology. Technology is useful hands of people, when you put it in the hands of artists who can amplify their voice."
“Technology is not useful when it takes the place of the artist, and that’s the concern with generative AI,” he continued. “It’s an amazing piece of technology, but the concern is that when it supplants the artist, then we have an issue because the computer cannot speak about humanity at all. It doesn’t know what it feels like.”

Acton supports killing babies and Republicans are offended at ads where her distanced mom calls her a liar. Republicans who are angry at running the ad have their values so twisted and warped, then they grandstand to condemn our own party.
This is why we lose, and even when we win, it’s an act of mercy.

The fake, psy-op freak out over the Amy Acton ad reminds me of the fake, psy-op freak out almost exactly two years ago over Trump calling for Kamala to get shot in the face, or something.
Y’all are sad.

I love the stop motion medium, but Laika’s movies emphasize the craft of stop motion animation, not the story. If you have a superpower like stop motion, you might night feel the demand to work on great story.
Its like the pretty girl who doesn’t have to develop her virtue or personality because she gets everything for her looks.

The Wildwood reviews are coming in...
"Wildwood is obsessed with impressing you instead of immersing you. Its marketing has emphasised the 16 year journey to make the film, the meticulously crafted puppets, sets and outfits and the idea that Laika had to become worthy of making it. All of this serves to put you in the cinema in a position to fawn over Wildwood’s technical brilliance, while paying no mind to the film’s underwhelmingly hollow story. A film should earn your investment in its world and characters, Wildwood takes it for granted."

I did illustrations for ComputorEdge when I really needed work at the start of my professional art career. I was always thankful, and they regularly gave me work so my wife and I could pay rent. Great people there and I'm still friends with my first editor after all these years.
94, fun year. About 4 artists at Blue Sky got regular freelance jobs for this newsprint pub ComputerEdge. I think I had one other cover. Gemini did ok making it faux oily.
