The farmer whose equipment, storage, and contracts put net worth well into seven figures. The contractor, the distributor, the clinic owner, the software shop that scaled past a dozen employees.
Texas has roughly 3.5 million small businesses—99.8% of all firms in the state—employing more than five million people. Oil and gas alone directly employs nearly half a million Texans at high wages and supports well over a million more while generating tens of billions in annual tax revenue that funds schools, roads, and the Permanent School Fund. These are not “oligarchs.” They are the people who turn risk, work, and capital into payrolls.
Talarico also told that 2020 audience that Texas’s oil and gas industry was “not gonna last,” comparing it to cassette tapes. The industry he wanted to help dismantle continues to bankroll the very public services his platform claims to care about.
Meanwhile, the candidate who once grouped capitalism with white supremacy has accepted support from billionaire donors and super PACs funded by the same class he rails against. The rhetoric is for the base. The money is for the campaign.
