For fifty eight years, my boss in Tokyo believed that beef should be sliced as thin as paper.
In Japan, we cook thin meat for four seconds in boiling broth. That is our way.
Then last month, the YouTube algorithm showed Director Sato a video of a man in Texas smoking a brisket.
It changed his life.
On Monday morning, he called me to his desk. His eyes were bloodshot.
"Have you seen this?" he whispered, turning his monitor toward me. "The American pitmaster does not sleep for sixteen hours. He sits by the fire in the dark. He guards the meat like a castle."
I said, "Sir, it is just a barbecue."
He slammed his hand on the desk.
"This is not cooking," he said. "This is a vigil."
Last Saturday was our annual company picnic by the river in Kanagawa. Normally, we grill thin meat and yakisoba for two hours and go home at 2:00 PM.
I arrived at 9:30 AM to help set up.
Director Sato was already there.
I want to be accurate here: he had been sitting in a folding chair since 10:00 PM on Friday night. He was wearing a towel around his head and staring at a massive black barrel smoker he had imported from Oklahoma.
Inside I said: THIS MAN HAS ABANDONED CORPORATE LIFE FOR THE SMOKE.
When we tried to help him, he held up a pair of metal tongs and clicked them twice.
"Step back," he said calmly. "The stall has begun. Nobody opens the lid."
Twelve Japanese accountants stood in complete silence around a barrel for four more hours. Nobody dared to eat a single noodle until he gave the signal.
At 1:45 PM, he sliced the meat. It fell apart on the cutting board.
My boss looked at the pink smoke ring, nodded once, and wiped a single tear from his cheek.
He has already submitted an official budget request for a trailer smoker for next fiscal year.

To our mothers 🙇🏻♀️
Most men carry a dangerous delusion in their twenties and thirties. We tell ourselves, "Once I make it big, once I can afford a two-thousand-dollar tailored suit, I will go home and pay my parents back."
That mindset has robbed more men of their final chance to say thank you arth.
When you have taken a crooked, zigzag road through life and made your share of mistakes, adult pride makes you want to cover your scars with expensive fabric. You want to show up at your childhood doorstep looking like a winner.
Then you stand in front of your aging mother, and you realize how foolish you were.
To the woman who raised you, a luxury jacket is just dead weight getting in the way of a hug.
As adults, we think maturity means adding things to ourselves: a higher salary, a bigger title, a fancier coat. In Japan, we learn that real maturity is the exact opposite. It is stripping away every layer of bluff, vanity, and stubborn pride until your boots are flat on the dirt.
Do not wait until you can afford a designer suit to go home. Take the heavy jacket off your shoulders today, walk through her front door in your plain shirt sleeves, look her in the eye, and say, "Thank you, Mom." Time will not wait for your bank account.

You know the blue eyes in DUNE?
There's a psychedelic reason for them.
According to mycologist Paul Stamets, author Frank Herbert told him that:
"Psilocybin mushrooms and fungal biology helped inspire the Spice, sandworms, and the Fremen's blue eyes."
Psilocybin mushrooms in the books, the Spice:
• expands consciousness,
• gives Paul visions of the FUTURE, and
• even makes interstellar travel possible.
Also, Herbert had been lying on his deck while tripping on psilocybin mushrooms.
And saw worms emerging from it.
That experience helped spark the idea behind Dune's giant sandworms.
Herbert's former student, John Shirley, also recalled him discussing it.
I bet you'll never look at those blue eyes the same way again 😂

Ignore anything federal especially the FDA, problem solved
With all the momentum with psychedelics, this is the perhaps most important, ignored policy issue. Psychedelic medicine supporters will be astonished if/when MDMA & psilocybin are FDA approved but almost all of these substances remain schedule I. Spreading the word can help chantps://t.co/d3wHtlDvG7
