Returning to Science Twitter briefly to thank the UTSW newsroom for their kind story on my New Innovator award. Humbling experience. A few thank yous to follow, as most haven't switched to the "other" place. :)
The next discovery in treating brain diseases may come from tiny cell structures. David Sanders, Ph.D., studies biomolecular condensates and their role in Alzheimer’s/ALS—work that earned him the @NIH Director’s New Innovator Award. Explore more: bit.ly/4o8rsKe #UTSWMed

#neverForget “Disqualifying dead cats with microchips is too little, too late.”
Pulitzer? <“There is no right or wrong here,” said James Russell, a conservation biologist. “It...touches on all these broader ethical issues: Should kids be the one killing cats? Should it be done as a charity competition event?”> nytimes.com/2023/04/19/wor…

Important paper. What do astrocytes and ependymal cells share in common that promotes tmem106b amyloid formation and lysosomal dysfunction in elderly individuals?

I came back on Twitter/X because of this!👇
Elegant and beautiful LYCHOS (GPR155) structure from out @Nature ! This work nicely complement our previous work on cholesterol binding and regulation of mTORC1 signaling. LYCHOS is a fascinating protein with a lot to uncover.
We are thrilled beyond words to see our LYCHOS (GPR155) publication out today in @Nature. 🥳

“LYCHOS is a human hybrid of a plant-like PIN transporter and a GPCR”

Proud of you Steven! Thanks for being such a great colleague and friend. Look forward to the exciting research that stems from this proposal. And the more exciting discoveries that emerge from your more high risk and innovative ideas that the nih would never entertain! :)

Amazingly counter-intuitive work by Jarrett Smith & David Bartel!

G3BPs promote translation of stress-response factors!

Stress granules are enriched in stress-resistant mRNAs.

G3BPs prioritize SG-enriched mRNAs, while suppressing cytosolic translation.

Little known fact: punding was named after Peter Pund, or the "yellow assassin" as most young scientists know him. Like many faculty in the UTSW Mol Bio department, Pund majored in textile engineering. Hence. pound-for-pund. Which was clearly not a typo.

This is an absolute BEAST of a paper from one of the most rigorous scientists I know @JVaquerAlicea …really elevates past work on tau biosensors to another level: the power of simple cell models in action! Congratulations to Jaime, @MDiamond_Lab et al. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
