What if you had a great idea for a #C64 game, but you lack the time and skill to create your masterpiece. Is it such a bad thing using AI tools to bring that idea to life?

I find it interesting what choice of game it came up with, it looks to be a mix of three real C64 games. Another World, Indiana Jones and Prince of Persia, however, you can now see why people frown upon using AI. It's basically scoured the internet and stole a little piece of someone else's hard work.

@CommodoreBlog No it's not. It's gatekeeping BS. I haven't made a C64 game yet but it's on my list of things to do. I have two finished SNES games. This is all like a dream come true. People who come at me hating can suck on a fat one.

@CommodoreBlog If you lack the arm strength to use a screwdriver to put together furniture, or don't have to extra time, and you use a drill instead, is that a bad thing?

@CommodoreBlog you are an artist that makes backgrounds and sprites yourself, the AI takes away the programming. Not so far away from RPG maker or else, that also had great comercial games coming out.
Engines nowadays as Unreal also take away much of the programming or making of assets.
If the AI does nearly everything, there is a big question how much you had of an idea.

@CommodoreBlog It's an interesting question. I recently disclosed for that (for the very first time) I very lightly used AI just to check some of the code I'd written didn't have any silly mistakes I made (and got a load of heat for that) 😂. So honest answer is I dunno 🫶

@CommodoreBlog That made me realize that a 3d-isometric Rick Dangerous would be quite cool.

@CommodoreBlog I only have a basic understanding of how internal combustion works, but it doesn't stop me from driving my truck everyday. I have zero issues with people using AI in their hobbies.
I watched non-digital artists bitch about Photoshop for years.

@CommodoreBlog Who cares ? It's a good way to keep the C64 alive
Now someone AI code a version of Nidhogg for the C64
All the anti AI stuff in retro gaming is nonsense

@CommodoreBlog @WizkidCoder Building a good game is not only about coding. If you’re objective when creating applications for old computers is to show off your coding skills, then don’t use AI, but if you have an idea for a game and you don’t have the code skills, go for it. The community thanks you

@CommodoreBlog It will become commonplace. Either vibe coding (low effort slop) or Agentic Coding where the Human directs the agent in creating the person's vision of the game. At that point you're acting as a Game Director. Directing your AI game developer.

@CommodoreBlog It suffers from the same issue almost all the AI C64 games suffer from. Anything with a bit of complexity blows memory budgets immediately. This works only with extra ram - C64U for instance, and its just a demo of a few screens.

@CommodoreBlog My policy is more C64 games no matter what the avenue is to get them

@CommodoreBlog At some point in their lives, programmers dream and think about making their own game. I sincerely believe that. But most of us always postpone it due to lack of time or motivation. Now, with AI, can you? Do it!

@CommodoreBlog I think it's ridiculous that everyone get all bent out of shape about using AI. It's not going away. It's only going to get better. Yes some creators will be out of a job, I mean it'll just happen. Wouldn't matter if I got mad about it, the only thing to do is live with it.

@CommodoreBlog Some people enjoy the furniture making process while others can't wait to sit on the furniture and watch a movie.. both are fine in my book

@CommodoreBlog People should enjoy it, and learn from it. Especially if it's non commercial, or isn't 100 cloning a game to sell. Have fun with it.

@CommodoreBlog Not my cup of tea. All the fun i get in programming is the things i learn, the internals i learn about the machine / chips. Having AI doing it for me is just non sense.

@CommodoreBlog I think it's a fantastic idea. Why not? The alternative is one C64 game less that the community could enjoy

@CommodoreBlog You can use them. If you don't have any computer science knowledge you will read related terms and concepts in the AI responses. You will have to accept the AI opinions at first, but, if you like what you are doing, hopefully you will do your own research and the AI will assist

@CommodoreBlog Here's the argument I use:
Does a movie or TV show need a Director?
With AI, you can become the Director. Your creation would not happen without you. It's your vision.
In both cases, there are good and bad Directors.

@CommodoreBlogoving watching people do new things with the C64. I love the rudimentary graphics. I used to have a tape drive that would take forever to load a simple maze game. Took so long to load, the likelihood of a mis-read glitch during the read was so high, I probably spent more time just trying to get the games to load than actually playing them.

@CommodoreBlogt effort into it and sweat the details to make it a really great product. If you do that, I don’t care if AI has been used, but this game does not look anything at all as finished. if you just throw it out to get attention without taking care of the product, you would probably just ruin your reputation.

@CommodoreBlog By all means, make your game any way you want.
But then don't be surprised when you try to SELL it that people turn on you. The AI you used to make it was trained on copyrighted materials the creators of which were not compensated. It burned subsidized electricity...

@CommodoreBlog @C64Reposts Using available tools is smart. As long as the finished product is good, who cares what tools were used?

@CommodoreBlog I guess what it will bring back in time is creativity as people work side by side with their computer .. the ai is bound by what it can find on the internet unless you describe it perfectly to it so it'll be down to your imagination to make things that don't immediately look ai

@CommodoreBlog I have two ideas for a c64 game. One is something reminiscent of Desert Strike. It ran on the SMS so should be possible on C64. The other is an action adventure game with a Last Ninja like engine (but very unlike Last Ninja otherwise). The latter seems easier. Scrolling is nasty.

@CommodoreBlog Yes it is. AI is evil, and the antithesis of the 8-bit spirit.
