If I put unicorns in my game it'll make it too soft, so what if you eat unicorns in the game, then it's too mean.. no happy medium! #gamedev

My generation dreamt of traveling through Europe by train 20 years ago, but today it's a death wish. Imagine how fast Europe has changed for the worse in a short span. Do you dare to imagine Europe in another 20 years?

I'm not sure a lot of people understand what game coders actually do. We're not spending 9 hours a day finely hand crafting artisan software and expressing our inner dreams... 90% of the time we are fighting compilers and existing architecture, having to work out how undocumented code works, and tracking down obscure bugs and behavioural issues.
Most of game programming is just difficult, tedious, laborious grunt work, and the cognitive load we have to endure to get anything done is tiring and frustrating. No game coder is doing it for this 90% of the job.
We make games because the 10% that IS actually about making things fun and expressing ourselves is so incredibly rewarding it makes the other 90% bearable.
Now imagine if there was a tool, some kind of AI agent maybe, which could do most of the 90% grunt work for you, leaving you to just make all the decisions and express your creativity. How amazing would that be. How completely revolutionary would that be.

AI should never be allowed to decide the software architecture. That's programmer's job. You have to review and micro-manage to force AI to stick with the designed architecture. AI will diverge from it otherwise and will use that as justification to diverge even more later.
I've been reviewing a lot of code written by Opus 5.5, and it still seems to make a lot of bad software engineering decisions. The kind that will accumulate/calcify into unmaintainable software over time. IMO even the agents will struggle to maintain vibecoded software.

The clocks went back last night ⏰
An extra hour in bed, darker evenings creeping in and the official sign that winter's on its way.
Love it or hate it, there's no denying what it means: log fires, early sunsets and cosy nights in just got a whole lot closer 🥰

The margin notes in Galileo’s personal copy of Copernicus are written in ink that fades from dark brown to pale yellow, showing where he paused to dip his quill while thinking.

Just dropped a brand new Space Blast progress video 🚀 The Game Boy is getting louder, faster, and meaner.
"Thunderstruck" chiptune hits different when the screen is full of explosions. Who’s still following this one from the first build? Cartridge when it’s done? D #GameBoyHomebrew #SpaceBlast #Chiptune #IndieGame #RetroGaming #solodev #GameBoy #gamedev #PhysicalRelease #AnaloguePocket

I found a GIF of the animation. Color clash made this a real challenge, to keep the yellow center following a smooth arc.

The collective noun for a group of British people is a queue. We are one of the most remarkably self-organising people on the planet. We need very little governance to prosper peacefully.
And yet… we have one of the most heavy-handed governments ever. Every aspect of life is micromanaged by ideologues in Westminster and Whitehall who are convinced they can run your life better than you. Your speech, your tax affairs, everything. You constantly run into the state every day of your life.
I’m truly sick of it

Coding in z80 is so fun, saved 1000 bytes and so excited. Can do so much with so little amount of memory, not even a K, and it feels like have freed up a vast library of space lol

Imagine you have a lovely apartment in Rue de la Republique in Paris.
Your apartment is on the 4th floor so you don’t think you are at risk from the rioters.
Yet they set fire to a huge bin and start throwing electric scooters into it. The explosion destroys half of your apartment.

First time in Japan, and the contrast with the West is staggering. This is what a high-trust society looks like: spotless streets, respectful people, exceptional public services, and attention to every detail. Makes you question what we’ve normalized back home.

Therapy can only do so much if you’re not able to get your basic needs met. Mental health is affordable housing. Mental health is free healthcare. Mental health is free education. Mental health is food security. Mental health is financial stability. Therapy can’t fix the system.

Art has layers like programming. Not doing the lowest layer manually doesn't mean it's not art. You don't have to hand paint every letter to be a designer. You don't need to hand write ASM to be a programmer (a compiler or Codex can do that for you).

For a generation that grew up reading 1984, The Lottery, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451, There Will Come Soft Rains and *gestures to Vonnegut in general* we are pretty bloody useless at recognising, and trying to stop, the end of everything.

BREAKING:
Scientists confirm that an ADHD brain can hyperfocus for 4 hours straight on a complex hobby—but will physically freeze for 3 days over a chore that takes 90 seconds to finish.
Researchers baffled.
ADHD community: "Yeah, we know."
No clinical citation needed—every parent and kid staring at a pile of shoes by the door is the study. Here is why tiny tasks paralyze an ADHD brain, and how to trick yourself (or your kid) into starting.1/6
