Brilliant analysis. Michael criticizes both sides correctly and that is rare.
In a few days, Israelis finally go to the polls. I hope Netanyahu loses - and eventually ends up behind bars, where he belongs!

This election matters for Syria, too!

I have always seen Syriaโ€™s pluralism as a strength. It is not Saudi Arabia, nor should it try to become a nation igious identity. Syria is home to Muslims, Christians, Druze, Alawites, Kurds, Arabs and many others. Its diversity is part of what makes it Syria.

But lately, I see Syria drifting in the wrong direction. Not simply towards Islam, but towards Islamism - an ideological project that risks turning religious identity into a tool for political control.

Look at the schoolbooks. There are troubling signs of increasingly anti-Israel content and Islamist ideological influence, in many respects even worse than under Assad!
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has made substantial efforts to remove antisemitic material from its school curriculum. That deserves recognition.

But we must also understand the context.

Netanyahuโ€™s policies, Israelโ€™s military operations and its continued presence in Syrian territory since December 2024 have fuelled anger, frustration and resentment. That does not justify Islamist indoctrination, but pretending Israelโ€™s actions have no consequences is equally dishonest.

This vicious cycle can be broken.

Gadi Eisenkot offers a potentially different approach. He is no dove on security, but he has argued for turning military strength into diplomatic gains rather than pursuing prolonged territorial expansion and permanent buffer zones deep inside Syria.

That creates an opening for something better: security arrangements, deterrence and negotiations instead of an endless cycle of occupation, humiliation and radicalisation!

I want to see a Syria that embraces its pluralism rather than abandons it. And I want to see an Israel that understands the difference between defending its security and pursuing policies that create the next generation of enemies!

Netanyahuโ€™s defeat would not solve everything. Eisenkotโ€™s election is not guaranteed, and a change of government would not magically transform Israeli policy.

But it could open a door.

The Middle East needs fewer ideological crusades, less territorial ambition and more pragmatic leadership. Syria and Israel both have something to gain from that.

Iraq's sovereignty is being challenged from within.

Prime Minister Ali al-Zaydi has ordered an investigation into Maysan Provincial Council President Mustafa Daair after he threatened to BREAK MAYSAN AWAY FROM IRAQ if Baghdad refuses to reopen the Sheeb border crossing with Iran r has also threatened civil disobedience and road blockades.

This is far more than a dispute over a border crossing. Daair is associated with the Sadiqoun bloc, the political wing of Asaib Ahl al-Haq, an Iran-controlled armed group with significant political influence in Iraq.

Iraq has spent years struggling with the consequences of Iranian influence and armed groups whose political power extends deep into state institutions. That influence cannot be separated from the wider question of whether Iraq can establish a genuine state monopoly on power.

There are also serious security concerns surrounding the Sheeb crossing. Iraqi officials have raised concerns about narcotics, counterfeit currency and inadequate security arrangements. Tehran has rejected Iraqi allegations of wrongdoing, but that does not remove Baghdad's sovereign right to control its own borders and investigate suspected illicit activity.

The question is whether Iraq's national interests will prevail over the interests of Tehran and its allies inside Iraq.

A provincial leader threatening to break away from the country to force Baghdad into reversing a national decision is a direct challenge to Iraq's territorial integrity. When that political confrontation involves a bloc associated with an Iran-aligned armed organisation, the implications for Iraqi sovereignty become even more serious.

Prime Minister al-Zaydi must make it clear that Iraq's territorial integrity is not negotiable, that the federal government has the authority to enforce its decisions, and that no political faction can use threats of secession to dictate national policy.

Iraq cannot become a genuinely sovereign state while armed factions and their political allies wield power that competes with the authority of its national institutions.

Iraq belongs to the Iraqi people. Not Tehran. Not the militias. And certainly not political figures who threaten to carve up the country to get their way!

@ColdBrief Strong point. Gallup backs it with comparable data: 93% of people in Saudi Arabia feel safe walking alone at night, among the world's top five. And the contrast says it all. Saudi Arabia's threat is imported, fired across a border by an Iran-backed militia.

Why has the Houthi movement failed to gain genuine social acceptance despite accumulating immense military and political power over the years? Why do Yemenis view it as an alien project imposed by force with no real public constituency? And why have its extensive ideological, religious, and political campaigns failed to win over the broader Yemeni public?
The answer cannot be reduced simply to the ongoing war. Deeper factors are at play: the foundational ideology of the group, how it manages state institutions, its treatment of society and the economy, Yemen's collective historical memory, and the destructive fallout of its domestic and regional policies.
While the points below do not capture every single grievance, they explain the persistent gulf between the Houthis' ability to control the country and their inability to earn its consent.

Following the unification of North and South Yemen on May 22, 1990, the country entered an era of multi-party democracy. On April 27, 1993, the unified nation held its first parliamentary elections. Several political parties participated, including the Al-Haqq Party and the Union of Popular Forces-both affiliated with the doctrinal Zaydi current that restricts legitimate religious and political rule (the Imamate) strictly to the descendants of Hasan and Husayn (the Prophet's grandsons).
In those 1993 elections, Al-Haqq won only two out of 301 seats. One of those two lawmakers was Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi, the founder of the Houthi movement. In the 1997 elections, Al-Haqq lost both seats and won none, a failure repeated in the 2003 elections.
Realizing that political parties rooted in the Imamate doctrine had no viable electoral path to power, hardline figures sought another route. They believed governance was an exclusive birthright reserved for their lineage (the Hashemites) and began organizing under the guise of reviving Zaydi religious teachings.
Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi and his associates established a group called the "Believing Youth" (Al-Shabab Al-Muโ€™min). What started ostensibly as an educational initiative evolved into one of the most dangerous sectarian and supremacist groups in the Arabian Peninsula, eventually taking the name "the Houthis" after its founder. Armed clashes broke out between Houthi fighters and local government forces in Saada province in June 2004, culminating in the death of Hussein al-Houthi in September of that year.
This period was pivotal. Yemenis had theoretically moved into a modern system grounded in constitutional pluralism, elections, and equal citizenshipโ€”flawed as the actual practice was due to social and political challenges. The rise of the Houthis created a direct clash between a modern republic of equal citizens and an armed project seeking to resurrect theological and racial supremacy.

At the core of Yemeni opposition to the Houthi movement is its ideological premise: an entitlement to power based on ancestry and bloodline. In traditional Zaydi Imamate doctrine, merit, scholarship, and popular choice are secondary; the legitimate ruler (Imam) must strictly descend from the lineage of Hasan or Husayn. When this doctrine is revived in modern politics, it collides directly with the principle of equal citizenship, which rejects the idea that bloodlines dictate political rights.
This is not conventional populist racism, such as European fascism; it is arguably more dangerous. It directly violates Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by claiming divine genetic election. The group asserts that God selected this specific lineage to lead humanity and spread its doctrine by force of arms. By extension, anyone who rejects their rule is branded a rebel against divine will.
In essence, the movement merges racial elitism with religious fundamentalism. While classical European supremacists claimed biological superiority on secular grounds, the Houthi elite drapes genetic claims in divine authority. They argue that God entrusted them with ruling the people, controlling their wealth, and dictating their fatesโ€”and that opposing them constitutes apostasy worthy of death.
This theology is plainly stated in the Houthis' official "Intellectual and Cultural Document," signed in March 2012. The text asserts that God chose this lineage from among all humankind to guide the world and preserve the Quran until the Day of Judgment, ensuring that in every era, a divinely designated leader emerges from among them to guide the Muslim nation. Society's rejection of this doctrine is not new; it is the natural continuation of centuries of Yemeni resistance to dynastic rule.

The Houthi agenda does not stop at capturing the state; it seeks to fundamentally reshape the cultural and social fabric of the country. This drive is best illustrated by their concept of "Faith Identity" (al-huwiyya al-imaniya), which the group aggressively spreads through public schools, summer camps, mosque pulpits, mandatory ideological courses, and state media.
Upon seizing the Ministry of Education, the Houthis carried out sweeping overhauls of the national school curriculum. Subjects such as Islamic studies, Quranic studies, Arabic, history, and civic education were altered to incorporate the militia's symbols, slogans, and sectarian dogma. In doing so, they stripped Yemeni parents of their right to determine their children's education and values.
This goes far beyond a ruling regime promoting an agenda; it is an effort to unilaterally redefine core human and civic concepts:
โ€ข Who counts as a true believer or Muslim?
โ€ข What constitutes real patriotism?
โ€ข What is the meaning of sacrifice, tribe, and leadership?
โ€ข Which religious doctrine must the next generation follow?
At the same time, schools have been converted into recruiting grounds for child soldiers. When an armed group monopolizes these existential definitions, it does not just demand political complianceโ€”it attempts to engineer an entirely new social identity subservient to dynastic rule. Many Yemenis view this as nothing short of cultural erasure.

Public resentment intensified once these doctrines moved from theoretical texts into state policy. Before their takeover of Sana'a, elite dynastic families often claimed they were politically marginalized. In reality, members of these families held high-level, sensitive positions throughout the republicโ€”serving as ministers, provincial governors, military and intelligence commanders, judges, and senior civil servants across various political parties. Their representation was disproportionately high because of the educational advantages they inherited from the pre-republican era.
However, after capturing Sana'a in September 2014, the Houthis established a parallel governance structure: a network of ideological "supervisors" (mushrifin). In practice, an informal supervisor holds far more actual power than the formal, qualified government official running a department or ministry.
Early on, the Houthi leader repeatedly insisted in speeches that his group had no desire for power or ministerial portfolios, claiming their sole aim was anti-corruption reform. He once stated:
"We have dedicated ourselves to God, in service of our people and their just causes... We have no political ambitions, and I informed the government delegation that we will never participate in any cabinet formation... We do not want your ministries."
Yet immediately after securing the capital, the group carried out sweeping purges of civil servants, replacing qualified career officials with ideological loyalists, almost exclusively drawn from their own caste.
The clearest demonstration of this institutionalized favoritism came in 2020, when the Houthis issued an administrative decree governing Zakat (alms) and the Khums (a historical 20% tax on resources). The decree legally designated a specific portion of public revenues and natural resources exclusively to the Hashemite caste (Bani Hashim). This institutionalization of racial entitlement over public wealth provoked widespread public fury, driving an irreparable wedge between the militia and ordinary citizens.

The Houthis do have loyalists in Yemen, alongside individuals swayed by their populist rhetoric surrounding Palestine and Israel. However, maintaining a devoted baseโ€”whether bound by family ties, ideological conviction, or wartime rhetoricโ€”is not the same as having genuine social consent.
Weapons can terrorize a populace, and militias can suppress dissent by jailing activists, executing critics, or persecuting opponents. Economic deprivation can force impoverished families to comply with militia dictates just to surviveโ€”a process commonly referred to as "Houthification" (tahawwuth). Yet coercion never produces genuine legitimacy.
The combination of forced impoverishment and intimidation has left millions reliant on basic aid handouts just to eat, forcing many to send their children to battlefronts or attend weekly staged rallies. Watching the militia leadership amass immense, visible fortunes in the middle of a famine has only deepened public bitterness.

The Houthi project relies heavily on continuous militarization and instilling hostility toward neighboring Arab states. The group views governments across the Arabian Peninsula as illegitimate puppets, both because their leaders do not hail from the "chosen" lineage and because the Houthis depict them as foreign agents of the West.
Consequently, the Houthis are indoctrinating younger generations with hostility toward almost every Arab and Muslim state, with the sole exception of Iran and its regional network. This policy leaves ordinary Yemenis facing urgent questions: Should Yemen's strategic geography, resources, and future be reduced to an operational launchpad for foreign proxy conflicts? Should their national security and historic ties to their neighbors remain hostage to an armed militia's ideological agenda?
The broad rejection of the Houthi movement among Yemenis is not an ordinary political dispute. It is a defense of human dignity, religious liberty, and equal citizenship under the law.
The Houthis' insistence on lineage-based privilege, cultural re-engineering, the institutionalization of discrimination, human rights abuses, and the dragging of Yemen into wider regional wars make broad social acceptance impossible. The militia has proven it can dominate territory by brute force, but force alone cannot build a functioning, just, or enduring state.

@ColdBrief my friend, for your perspective and your support for Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni people. I agree that unifying command and strengthening Yemeni forces are essential. However, comparisons between conflicts must account for their different contexts, and external training alone is not enough. A lasting solution requires coordinated military, political and economic efforts, an end to Iranian support for the Houthis, and the restoration of Yemenโ€™s state institutions and sovereignty.

@ColdBrief It's such an uphill battle for Muslim countries when people who consider themselves Muslims abroad preach for your instability.

@ColdBrief Saudi Arabiaโ€™s goal is to support Yemenโ€™s legitimate government and protect its own security. The international community must do more to secure Bab al-Mandab and eliminate Houthi terrorism through a Saudi-led coalition modeled on the international coalition against ISIS.

Iโ€™m genuinely glad to see the fierce, constructive pushback against Syriaโ€™s โ€œnewโ€ curriculum!
It is backward, dangerous, and completely detached from who Syrians actually are. It caters to hardline Islamist ideas at a time when school should be our best tool to prevent want to see what real national unity looks like, look at how Jordan responded to the brutal terror attack on the Christian community in Hammoud, Karak.
King Abdullah II drew a hard line on equal citizenship, stating clearly that all Jordanians are โ€œpartners in land and fate, and nothing stands between them.โ€ He made it clear that anyone trying to divide the nation with bullets has zero chance against a united people!

The response from Jordanian society was just as powerful! Prominent tribal leaders- like Sheikh Mohammed Jalal Al-Qallab Al-Amoush of the Bani Hassan tribe- spoke out immediately! He declared the attack completely alien to Jordanian values and Islam, stressing that the bullets aimed at Karak werenโ€™t just aimed at Christians- they were an attack on every single Jordanian and the Kingdomโ€™s stability!

That is real leadership. That is the exact blueprint Syria needs!

Syria belongs to all Syrians, regardless of sect or religion. A national curriculum should use Syriaโ€™s rich, diverse history to bring a fractured society together!
Instead, authorities are trying to push "Taliban-lite" ideas that were basically unheard of in authentic Syrian culture before Daesh and the SNA.

Children are the future of the country, not ideological tools. Throw this curriculum in the garbage where it belongs, and start over!

Replying to @ColdBrief
@ColdBrief Islamists have never desired the development of a prosperous Muslim sovereign nation but rather a collection of Marxist structures that perpetuate poverty and a victimized mindset while funding and committing acts of terrorism for a cause they have deliberately engineered.

The Houthis targeting Saudi Arabia with missiles and drones is naturally a major security concern.
Yet when you look at actual domestic reality on the ground, the comparison is staggering.

Last year, Sweden ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ช recorded 158 confirmed firearm shootings (down from 391 in 2022); knowledge, had none.
Last year Sweden recorded 189 explosions and IED incidents; to my knowledge, Saudi Arabia recorded none.

Street shootings, public armed ambushes, and drive-bys are virtually absent in major hubs like Riyadh or Jeddah.
The majority of civilian homicides documented in regional administrative data are rooted in domestic disputes or localized interpersonal altercations rather than criminality.

In other words: Saudi Arabia is safer than nations like Sweden- despite facing an ongoing terror threat from Iran-backed Houthis... Let that sink in!
๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Update: What does daily life look like in Riyadh and across Saudi Arabia amid Houthi terrorist attacks?

๐Ÿ”ต King Khalid International Airport reopened and resumed flight operations today.

๐Ÿ”ต Events, conferences, concerts and entertainment activities continue.

๐Ÿ”ต public spaces remain busy as usual, late into the night.

๐Ÿ”ต The Kingdom continues to welcome heads of state and host diplomatic visits, cultural exchanges and entertainment events.
