How I Write wouldn't be possible without the support of Alpha School.

Years ago, Alpha's founder @jliemandt said to me: "You can build the best writing podcast in the world, and I'm here to help." That spirit defines everything at Alpha. It's a place where students are ger and raise their ambitions.

It's the school I wish I'd been able to attend, and I'm exceptionally proud to have Alpha as the sponsor of the show.

They're opening new campuses across America, and if you're interested in enrolling your child, learn more at the link below.

I spent yesterday in @Alphaschool’s NYC campus, where the K-1 students have been reading autumn favorites and modern classics.

Duck! Rabbit! was one of my daughter’s old favorites. Kid giggles galore.

My GCSE pupils were so excited to use the GIS app they helped me vibe code together using AI, to examine the distribution of earthquakes across the Earth.

It staggers me that my pupils & I were able to generate this app together & then use it to empower geographical enquiry!

A lot of people are very upset about a library at a school.
@C_Hendrick @Alphaschool Wow, a library that has books. Groundbreaking.

What if one of Americas largest education experiments revealed something we still don’t want to talk about?

In the 1970s, Project Follow Through put nearly 20 teaching models to the test in classrooms serving children from low income families.

There was one approach that stood n.

It didn’t just produce stronger academic results in reading and mathematics, but it also performed incredibly well in problem solving and student self esteem.

Yet decades later, we’re still debating whether this approach belongs in our classrooms…Why?

The latest season of Sold a Story brings this debate back into focus. But the history goes much deeper than one podcast or one teaching method.

Perhaps it’s time to ask a bigger question: Are we choosing teaching methods based on what looks good in a classroom, or what actually helps children learn?

🎥 Watch the video and join the conversation.

The uncomfortable question is why a basic, bedrock government funded and run service, public education, is not required or expected to follow evidence where it leads, without a hint controversy.

This kind of teaching is why the 18 year old at the Burger King register can’t count out your change.

Notice also that he talks for almost a full minute before even mentioning what actually happens in his classroom. He needs that long to rationalize how absolutely ridiculous this kind of approach is.
This 2nd grade teacher is being propped up as an example to people across Utah as to how math should be taught in elementary school. He “trains” hundreds of new and current teachers. What say ye @rastokke @MrZachG @sarahpowellphd

Ok I hope this will be the most useful conversation you hear about Education this year.

This week’s episode of The Amol Rajan Connection (ARC) with @daisychristo of No More Marking has really struck a chord.

Anyone with kids; or who works in schools, colleges and universities; or who is interested in the very nature of learning and how the mind works; or what technology is doing to us, will enjoy this. That’s not my view alone; it’s the revealed view of the comments flooding in.

We discuss:

+ working memory vs long-term memory
+ the risk of creating a Stupidogenic Society
+ why Knowledge is Freedom
+ schools for the rich and skills for the poor
+ how to optimise vocational education
+ the implications of AI for education
+ what children should learn
+ technology and the classroom
+ Labour’s education policy

Something for your weekend perhaps.

We’d be honoured if you’d others listening to this episode.

Thanks so much for your time - and to Daisy, for a very special contribution to the ARC Universe.

Available on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Amazon Music.

The first lesson I ever taught was based on the structures in Bringing Words to Life and the work of Margaret McKeown. Twenty years later I get to talk about vocabulary with her. The indirect effects she has had on the hundreds of students I've taught is immeasurable.
Launching today: the inaugural podcast/webcast of Research Meets Reality!
In every episode of Research Meets Reality, Dr. Stephanie Stollar and Dr. Pam Kastner bring a leading researcher or national literacy expert directly into conversation with a classroom teacher or other he hard, real work of applying that research with actual students and gotten results.

Not theory. Not a pilot program. Real kids. Real classrooms. Real Monday mornings.

You’re going to hear both the science and the story, both the “why” and the “how.”

And you’re going to leave every episode knowing exactly what to try next!

We are starting with a question that is fundamental to literacy. How do students develop rich knowledge of words?

Joining us for this robust conversation is Dr. Moddy McKeown, vocabulary researcher and co-author of Bringing Words to Life, and Sean Morrissey, Former School Psychologist, Fifth Grade Teacher and Creator of the Word Mapping Project!

Watch here: youtube.com/watch?v=zyesP8… be sure to download the listening guide and additional resources, here: stephaniestollarconsulting.com/podcast1

"Understanding" is not some mystical higher faculty. It’s just a particular arrangement of memorized knowledge — “remembering in disguise,” as

This is the strongest episode of Season Two so far. It reduced me to tears. It’s heartbreaking to understand we could educate more disadvantaged kids if we did what works, not just what we prefer.
