I finally tried out v5 of the Designspace spec, which allows separate but related fonts (e.g. Roman and Italic) to be set up in one file, along with labels for instance style attributes… and it’s amazing!

FontMake built it beautifully, including both fonts with stat tables. 🎉

Upgrading was easier than expected, and worked flawlessly (in my case, at least).

I’ll probably make a video about this soon!

This tool is a super handy way to interact with designspaces when a UI is helpful. I still use it to start out new designspaces, and then I move into code for faster edits. Stoked to see there is a v2.0 in the works!

Another awesome thing that just dropped in FontTools: the Level 4 Instancer, which can add a new default location to a variable font!

I’m really excited that FontTools can now set the default of a variable font axis without needing a whole separate source for this, so I wrote a quick script to test it out.

It’s simple, and works really well!

@LyonsType_BU The credit and congrats here goes to the FontTools and FontMake contributors who made it happen! I’m just excited that it makes font builds cleaner.

@ArrowType I still need to choose default location of a VF on desired point of axes(not in a master location), i think it's a technical limitation and wonder why nobody cares?!(you may use a VF font on the web, without proper font-feature-settings, every text are in default point)

@aminabedi68 The FontTools Instancer just got the ability to add a source location to a variable font (“level 4” as the docs call it), thanks largely to work from @behdadesfahbod!

I still have to test whether this will work in the DS to FontMake workflow, but if not, it should soon 🤞
