Astonishing details in the Los Angeles fake drug rehab center case, these fraudsters were genuine monsters
The fake rehab center operators were drugging their human livestock to stop them trying to leave, so they could keep the insurance money flowing

I've seen chart crimes, I've seen chart felonies, but this is a violation of the chart Geneva Convention
Good chart from this week's The Real Economy @commonplc:Community noteSupreme Court struck down IEEPA tariffs on February 20, 2026. The employment gains above trend shown in the chart occurred after the ruling. scotusblog.com/2026/02/suprem… fred.stlouisfed.org/series/MANEMP

I saw Jerry Seinfeld standup last night; honestly, he is still excellent.
There’s a funny paradox where we associate his register and delivery so strongly with core 1990s memories that we don’t really expect the actual guy to riff on phones, AI, prediction markets. But he does.

If you want a good example of why ITEP's concept of effective tax rate is meaningless, go to the report and organize the table of companies by "tax rate paid."
There are two companies with ETRs >100% and dozens with ETRs >21%.
There are two companies with ETRs >100% and dozens with ETRs >21%.
ITEP is at it again, comparing two different accounting systems, built for different purposes, reporting to different audiences, using different rules.
From an earlier version: Did 88 Corporations Really Pay No Income Tax on Billions of Profits? Nope.

Genuinely heartening to see this investigation is beginning now under the Trump administration, and conversely, that the Omar investigation began in June 2024 during the Biden administration.
The Justice Department is examining allegations that Corey Lewandowski profited off his top position at the Department of Homeland Security, people familiar with the matter said on.wsj.com/4jBE9yy

Birds of prey are not inherently Nazi, especially in a North American context. Red black and white, also not inherently Nazi.
But specifically bounding a black stripe inside a white stripe on red is unfortunately very Reichskriegsflagge.

A policy that "does not exist and will never exist"?
Is that an assurance that Zucman, Saez, Shanske, Gamage, and Galle will never promote a permanent state-level wealth tax? Because they've advocated for them before and called them the goal quite recently.

Let’s be clear: this is a highly inappropriate way to model the effect of Prop 40 on taxpayer behavior.
For one, it’s a basic violation of rational expectations, a cornerstone of modern economics.
In Jaros and @joshrauh world, the billionaires act irrationally: they respond to a policy that does not exist and will never exist.
Economics students around the world are taught this is not an appropriate way to model behavior — but apparently in this context (fighting Prop 40) it’s OK.

NEW YORK TIMES now confirming my reporting from weeks ago that El-Sayed signed a letter in support of the Muslim Brotherhood in 2012
(naturally not crediting the Free Beacon at all)
El-Sayed also refused to comment on letter to them!)

I dislike shrimp; they're weird and gross and insect-like. So in practice I am an excellent Shrimp Effective Altruist by not eating them.
However, I am a bad Shrimp Effective Altruist in theory; their gross arthropodal nature means I'm unmoved by appeals to their welfare.

Some big personal news: I'm moving to join Works in Progress as executive editor, starting next month. I have been hoping for an opportunity to work with @bswud and @s8mb for more than a decade, and I'm incredibly excited to finally have one.
WIP is expanding on every front right now. We'll soon begin coverage of business and finance, as well as putting out more reported features. To that end, we'll be hiring more writers and reporters in the year to come. I'm planning to remain based in the US to help build out our presence here.
The print edition of WIP has existed for less than 12 months, but sometime in the next week or so we will reach our 10,000th paying print subscriber. It's a group that now includes people who've been at the highest echelons of government and who run the world's biggest public companies. We’re already on track to 3x that number next year. We'll be in store at Barnes & Noble, Hudson News and independent newsagents next week too.
I think WIP is providing something that people are craving from physical media right now: fewer, extremely well-crafted pieces in a beautifully designed form. Issues now feature an amazing group of columnists, including Tyler Cowen, Dan Wang and Stephen Kotkin. Each edition is better than the last.
You'll see us in more and more places next year too. In January, our new weekly documentary films will launch on YouTube. We're expanding into the events space, with a new series in North America. The sky is the limit from here on out.

NEW: Another insane one involving Fairfax County, VA. A Tunisian illegal alien w/ 30+ arrests and 90+ felony & misdemeanor charges throughout northern VA who routinely has his charges dropped & ICE detainers ignored is back in local custody again.
@NickMinock reports Fairfax DA Steve Descano botched a felony drug case against him last week that could have put him in prison for up to 40 years. Descano’s office failed to publish a witness list as required by a judge’s order, resulting in certain witnesses not being able to testify, and the case was dropped because of Descano’s error. Now he’s arrested again - this time in Arlington County, VA.

🚨Exclusive: ICE lodged a detainer against an illegal immigrant who has a lengthy criminal history in Virginia. He’s been arrested 30+ times for 90+ different felonies and misdemeanors. This is the man Steve Descano botched a prosecution on last week.
