Today I'm on a panel in Accra on what Ghana should put On Chain first. My answer is Trade Finance. The paperwork already exists, the delays are real, and a deal is easy to explain to the person funding it. Start where the pain is already obvious.

A major milestone for the DRC under the leadership of President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo!

The DRC’s removal from the FATF Grey List marks an important step toward strengthening confidence in its financial system and investment climate.

Following the October 26 joint meeting, the DRC reaffirms its sincere gratitude to the U.S. Treasury for its continued support and partnership.

The part that stood out to me in Niks podcast was this.

If capital is always a constraint. Founders need to solve access to capital by generating enough cashflows to fund their big bets.

Raising equity can’t always be a plan. I think it’s the most instructive part.

how can you out-compete the people who work 9 to 9, six days a week.
Revolut CEO Nik Storonsky: “The US is not that competitive. Europe is even less competitive.”

“China is competitive.”

“China is 9/9/6. Even if you are good in Europe, or in the US, how can you out-compete the people who work 9:00 to 9:00, six days a week?”

“I started in a 40 companies. Within 5 years, only 3 companies survived. They all worked on the weekends.”

“Within 10 years, only 2 companies survived out of 140.”

“Working weekends is a must if you want to survive. Purely statistically.”

In the end, these things are infinite games. Your lifespan and health is the ultimate runway you have as a founder.
In 2017, Monzo's founder called Revolut's FX and crypto a "1% niche problem".

Storonsky, on the same stage: Revolut opens 3,000 accounts a day, more than they do. Calling that a niche didn't add up.

What happened next:

1. FX was the wedge that won Revolut its first customers
uisition tool: standard users unlocked it by inviting 3 friends
3. By 2021, FX and Wealth were 55% of Revolut's revenue

Storonsky looks like someone who can take more pain. If you can take pain, you can win, these games are hard.

Doesn’t work in Africa. Make profits o.
A startup isn't supposed to make money.
It's supposed to grow fast and maximize the odds of returning a multiple to its investors.

Once you take VC money, your job is to increase value, not generate profit. If a company in my portfolio is sitting on profits, I'm annoyed. That cash should be going back into growth.

If you own 100% of your company, do whatever you want with the profits. Pay yourself a dividend. Buy a boat. Your call.

With VC funding, it doesn't work that way. Dividends sometimes become acceptable after an IPO, long after anyone still calls the company a startup.

Profit isn't the goal, it's what's left when you've run out of better places to put the money.

Host a handful of journalists, and they’ll prattle on endlessly about our dear tech ecosystem. Will they debate how the media business they work in is hanging on for dear life? Don’t hold your breath.
