Please read this crucial story
FOLLOW THE THREAD: Obama, El-Sayed, and the road back to Cairo
October 24, 2026 | 10 days until Election Day
Today Barack Obama is in Detroit, rallying for Abdul El-Sayed.
I lived in Egypt for seven years. In 2011 I watched the Arab Spring from my barricades were in front of my house, the Muslim Brotherhood was in the streets, and a prison five miles away was emptied.
Most voters in Michigan have never heard how that story connects to today's rally. Over the next four videos, I'll walk you through it:
1What I saw in Cairo in 2011, firsthand
2How the Obama administration handled the Brotherhood's rise to power
3El-Sayed's 2012 letter to Morsi, and the money tied to its fellow signers
4Why it matters on November 3
These are my own photos, my own timeline and the public record. Follow the thread.
โ Robin
Friday, Jan. 28, 2011. It went eerily quiet. The silence was deafening. Then everything changed.
These are my own photos from Jan. 30 and Feb. 1, 2011. We barricaded the road in front of my house to keep the Brotherhood from riding in on motorcycles. The army was in our streets.
The prisons opened. One was five miles from my house. Mohamed Morsi walked out of one of them.
Then I watched Washington open the door: the 2009 Cairo speech, formal contacts in 2011, and a congratulations call when Morsi won in 2012.
Sources: White House archives, Al Jazeera, Ahram Online, State Dept. 2/5
As Morsi took over, friends got me out to Dubai. No one came for us. We found our own way out.
Meanwhile, the money kept flowing to Morsi's Egypt:
โข $450 million in emergency cash requested for his government
โข F-16s delivered from an order placed under Mubarak
โข $190 million released by Kerry after meeting Morsi
โข $1.3 billion in military aid approved, though Egypt failed U.S. democracy standards
From where I stood, America chose a side.
Sources: Fox News/AP, Reuters, Ahram, White House archives. 3/5
Nov. 25, 2012. Days after Morsi gave himself sweeping powers, Egyptian Americans published a statement backing him. It urged him to "purge the media and the police as quickly as possible."
Signer No. 33: "Dr. Abdul Rahman El-Sayed, New York."
It's still online at Egypt's state-owned Al-Ahram: gate.ahram.org.eg/News/276648.asโฆ
The New York Times reports he signed it. His campaign declined to answer questions about it. The Free Beacon, citing FEC records, reports that fellow signers have given his campaigns more than $23,000.
Purge the press? That's who wants a Senate seat. 4/5
El-Sayed says he wants money out of politics.
โข His father-in-law, a former CAIR-Michigan president who serves on ISNA's founding committee, has given about $300,000 to the super PAC backing him (FEC records).
โข Fox News Digital found more than $115,000 given to his campaign by people tied to CAIR. That's individual donations, not money from CAIR itself.
Today, Obama takes the stage with him in Detroit.
Same thread, from Cairo 2009 to Michigan 2026. The silence was deafening. Don't stay silent now.
Michigan votes Nov. 3. Know who's on your ballot.
