I am going to try and answer a bunch of questions that people have raised about Sign in with ChatGPT in the next couple of days. Before that, I want to let you all in to why we shipped Sign in with ChatGPT (SIWC) in the first place. Clarify our intentions here before getting to the specifics.

I saw a demo of this 2 weeks ago and was spellbound. A visual interactive illustration is 100X better than a paragraph of text. I am particularly excited by how this makes learning new things easier.
GPT-6 and Intelligent UI, now rolling out in ChatGPT for everyone.
Intelligent UI in ChatGPT delivers fast, interactive answers that make everyday questions more visual, complex topics easier to grasp, and interactive tools for your task available on the spot.

Yet another example of how Sign in with ChatGPT can be transformative! — This fascinating complex of colourful ribbons and micro-structures is Hemoglobin. It carries oxygen through your blood. It is made of 4 protein chains (represented by 4 different colors), each containing a atom where the oxygen binds. When I first started at OpenAI a year ago, I worked with our customers in the life sciences vertical. We went deep into the workflows of Research Scientists so we could understand how best to help them use AI to accelerate drug discovery. Scientists use the open source Mol* viewer to explore the 3D structures of proteins and how they function and interact. It was mesmerizing to looking at these structures, only I didn’t understand a single thing. This morning, I built a minimalistic desktop version of the Mol* viewer for dummies (like me), put an AI assistant powered by Sign in with ChatGPT on it, gave it a local MCP and computer use and suddenly I now have a tutor - who manipulates the shapes in real time, points at things and explains them to me in great detail.

Sign in with ChatGPT is available for all OSS tools - Every single one of them. This has massive benefits! Here I have Blender running locally with a Chat interface on it powered by Sign in with ChatGPT. It has its own super-lightweight custom built harness that speaks to the puter Use. I can package this up as a binary and send it to a colleague who can click open, Sign in with ChatGPT and just get to the good bits. They’ll never have to switch tools. Yay? @BlenderArtists

I think there is much more potential energy in Sign In With ChatGPT/Plugin Extensions than we realize

5. With Sign in with ChatGPT, we have tried to reimagine a world where our developers and ecosystem partners can simply focus on building good harnesses without having to worry about tokenomics. @sama has mentioned this multiple times and I have taken that vision as my daily purpose - We want to be an intelligence utility company delivering intelligence in a meter. This utility that we deliver in a meter should enable people to use it flexibly to power any appli(cation/ance) they want. The appli(cation / ance) maker (you, developers) should be able to spend all of your time and energy in just solving real user problems with it.

4. What’s more - there is voracious demand from our users to make their subscriptions portable. We just didn’t have a well thought through productized solution that removed friction in this process, that had adequate safety checks built-in, and made it is as simple as click ‘Sign in with ChatGPT’, provide consent and start using for a non-technical user.

3. Unfortunately though and for a long time now, these very same OSS tools that users have come to enjoy using have had to find hacky ways to get the user to bring their own inference; worse still for commercial tools, they have constantly had to adapt their pricing strategy from credits based pricing, fixed subscription, BYOK etc.

2. I personally think Codex is hands down the best coding / productivity harness that exists today. But I look around and see people absolutely swearing by the likes of Amp, Devin, Pi, Opencode and T3. I see users absolutely loving the simplicity of tools like lovable & v0 over all the power user capabilities that Codex ships with.

1. I started working on Sign in with ChatGPT about 6 months back. And from the very first day, our objectives were to build something that would a) Make our users’ ChatGPT subscriptions more valuable; b) Enable our users to take their identity, their subscriptions, frontier model intelligence and more to complete their AI workflows wherever they want; c) Launch something that would encourage the developer community and our ecosystem partners to build excellent tools & harnesses that solve real user problems.
