The Firecracker MicroVMs behind Netlify Edge Functions start in about 2ms at p99. Once a function's JavaScript server starts listening, we snapshot the VM. Idle functions scale to zero, and the next invocation restores from that memory-mapped snapshot, so the VM starts executing before the whole snapshot is back in memory.
@UnikraftCloud built that lifecycle, and we worked closely with their team through the migration.

Over a year in the making, we can now finally (and proudly) announce that @Netlify Edge Functions run on top of @UnikraftCloud ! 🚀
It’s been an incredible honour working so closely with the Netlify team. From the very beginning, this has felt like a true engineering partnership, with both teams working side-by-side to rethink what the underlying infrastructure could look like.
Projects like this are exactly why we started Unikraft.
Working with a team operating at Netlify’s scale has pushed us to grow, sharpen the platform, and build new capabilities that will benefit everything we do going forward.
A huge thank you to everyone at Netlify and Unikraft who has been part of this over the past year.
SO incredibly proud of what we’ve built together, and even more excited about what comes next. ❤️

Warm Edge Function invocations on Netlify now take about 5-6ms at the median. On our previous infrastructure, they took 25-40ms.
Requests now run inside our own network instead of going out to a hosted execution service. It's already serving your production traffic at the same pricing, and your functions keep working exactly as you wrote them.

Super proud and excited to be an official sandbox provider behind @omnaraai's agent stack!
Omnara takes care of running the agent: sessions, orchestration, recovery & context management.
@UnikraftCloud is where the actual work gets done: running shell commands, editing files & spinning up MCP servers. That, and your sandbox scales-to-zero immediately after every turn.

Introducing Omnara: the open-source alternative to Claude Managed Agents.

Unikraft is hiring a Systems Engineer. Work close to the metal on a cloud platform built from scratch: C, KVM, Linux internals. Remote-first, small team of kernel hackers and OS veterans.

Release 11 — Metis is out. **This is the biggest release we've shipped.**
It comes with advanced snapshotting (branching and checkpointing), persistent storage via custom filesystems, a plugin API for extending microVM capabilities with custom code, a network shield that sits the public Internet to filter traffic and inject secrets, and a revamped dashboard.
All of it is available now for enterprise customers, and coming to the hosted platform very soon.
Over the next few weeks Felipe, Alex, and Jerome will be doing deep dives on each of the features and what's coming in Release 12. There's a lot to unpack.

Teams need the strong isolation of virtual machines, but need to spin them up in milliseconds. Instead of giving up one side, @UnikraftCloud's @felipehuici will explain why you don't have to give up both at #P99CONF. Save your free spot here: ow.ly/hthm50ZjGXl

78% smaller images. VM-level isolation. Thousands of instances per machine. This is what happens when you run Postgres on Unikraft Cloud. Congrats to the @prisma team on an incredible result.
With Unikraft, Prisma Postgres reduced its PostgreSQL image from 280MB to 61MB.
These smaller images run as unikernels on bare metal.
That gives each database strong VM-level isolation, while allowing a single machine to host thousands of Prisma Postgres instances.

Cloud efficiency is no longer optional when milliseconds define cost and performance.
@UnikraftCloud, founded by @felipehuici, @s_kuenzer, and @nderjung and backed by @heavybit, @vercel, Mango Capital, @Firestreakvc, Fly VC, and @_firstmomentum, raised $6M to commercialize unikernel-based infrastructure delivering sub-10ms cold starts and ultra-lightweight workloads at massive density.
The next wave of cloud infrastructure will be won by teams that remove system overhead at the root, not manage it at the surface.

The recent CVE-2026-31431 vulnerability is yet one more reason **never** to use containers for isolation in the cloud:
* Containers **do not** contain ⚠️
* Isolates **do not** isolate ⚠️
At Unikraft every single workload runs within a strongly isolated virtual machine 🔐, so none of our customers were affected by this CVE -- our security comes not from the user/kernel boundary in the guest but from the VM isolation underneath, so while you may get root privileges **within** the VM you can't break **out** of it. Unless you're looking for trouble, always use virtual machines for strong, hardware level isolation.
Oh, and we offer that level of security all of the while providing millisecond semantics for cold starts, scale to zero, branching, checkpointing, etc. Yes, it's possible to have:
* Strong security 🔐
* High efficiency ⚡️
* Large scale 🚀
With Unikraft, pick all three! 🔥

@gwenshap My big bet in the agent space is that you're going to want a much greater scale of agents and tool calls than you're thinking of right now... it will become an efficiency game... so you'll want them fast and with minimal footprint... @UnikraftCloud so far looks very interesting

It's a wrap at Kubecon! 1,017,490 scale to zero microVMs in a single server, cold started and resumed in ~10ms 🚀
The final count was higher, after we had huge crowds hit a button to start new ones. Next up: run a script to see how high the count will go before something crashes and burns 🙂🔥
