Katie’s preventable, violent killing on the streets of Sanctuary Urbana, Illinois, brought me into this battle. But it also made it impossible to look away when other families suffer the same unimaginable and foreseeable loss.

I want to introduce you to Anya Varfolomeev and her kin. Both were 19 when an intoxicated driver killed them on California’s 405 Freeway. They had their whole lives ahead of them.

Their story moved me because, in so many ways, it mirrors Katie’s. Two young lives cut short. Families left with a lifetime of grief. And difficult questions about the policies, laws, and decisions that shape accountability afterward.

The driver received two 10-year sentences, served concurrently. California’s sentencing rules and credits reduced his time in state prison to approximately 3½ years. As his release approached, Anya’s father says he received just seven days’ notice.

That is why I write about families beyond my own. Their children matter. Their stories deserve to be heard. And the consequences of government policies deserve honest scrutiny, regardless of whose political narrative they challenge.

Anya and Nicholay are not the only family whose story deserves to be heard. There are others, and I intend to keep telling these stories because the human consequences of public policy must never be ignored.

The Other Side of “Our Neighbors.” Another family. Another tragedy. More questions our leaders must answer.

And we’re supposed to believe the rhetoric about public safety while ignoring the consequences of the policies?
not the words. Follow the results, not the claimed intentions.

The arrogance, the gaslighting, the absence of humility or self-reflection are staggering. Words ring hollow when the results contradict the promises.

Were these outcomes by design or incompetence? Neither is acceptable.

We need to stop rewarding policies that incentivize the wrong behavior and leave innocent people exposed to the consequences.

Refuse to be lied to. Demand accountability. And when elected officials cannot govern competently, show them the door.

Even when it feels like there isn’t enough to overcome the Illinois machine, inherited wealth, and special interests, if we refuse to accept the status quo and demand better, what feels like not enough can become more than enough to change Illinois.

We take seriously our responsibility to protect minors. X has zero tolerance for CSAM, including AI-generated CSAM. As an industry leader, we actively report and block users who violate our Terms of Service, which absolutely prohibit all forms of child sexual exploitation, including posting or engaging with child sexual abuse material. So far this year, we have reported 1.3 million cases to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Additionally, we employ industry-leading tools and processes to protect minors, including:

- We scan media against known-CSAM hash libraries (including hashes from NCMEC and partners such as IWF) using industry tools such as PhotoDNA alongside proprietary detection. We run models at post-creation time (LLMs and custom classifiers, legal/policy-reviewed) and conduct manual Child Safety operations reviews to catch CSE/CSAM that isn’t already in a hash set. We also run proactive keyword and media sweeps, plus heuristics that are partially or fully automated, when signals indicate possible CSAM.

- Apparent CSAM leads to removal, and we have permanently suspended over 780,000 users in the past month alone, with ban-evasion controls. Whenever we become aware of apparent CSAM (including AI-generated CSAM), we report it to NCMEC. AI-generated CSAM is enforced under the same Child Sexual Exploitation policy as non-generative CSAM. We also continuously improve hash coverage, classifiers, and review workflows because this threat is ever evolving and highly adversarial.

- We have also brought and will, if necessary, continue to bring lawsuits against users who have intentionally circumvented safeguards to generate this despicable content. In the first half of 2026 alone, X Corp made more than 1.3 million reports to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, resulting at least 543 arrests

- Finally, we are an active member of the Tech Coalition, an alliance of global tech companies who are working together to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse online. Tech Coalition is an invaluable resource to understand the best practices and new approaches used across the industry to detect and prevent the sharing of CSAM. It allows member companies to share best practices, challenges and new insights that ensure that we are up-to-date when it comes to trends related to these high severity violations.

The 9/11 Memorial "Tear Drop" sit's directly across from NYC, in Bayonne New Jersey, just the other side of the Statue of Liberty, yet we hear nothing about it.

This beautiful, 100 ft tall monument was gifted to the people of the United States by the people of Russia in 2006, who lost their lives on that fateful day, September 11, 2001.

The breaking in the cracked façade forms the shape of the two towers.
The giant suspended tear drop signifies the tears of the entire world that day.

Maybe it's something that needs to be known, starting today.
