Congratulations to @JAXA_en and partners @NASA, @esa, @CNES, and @DLR_en on the launch of MMX! 🚀

MMX is currently headed to Phobos, the larger of Mars’s two moons. It’ll be the first mission to land on a moon of Mars and the first to bring back samples from Phobos. The at least 10 grams of surface material and bring it home in 2031. It’s also dropping off a rover named Idefix to explore.

And Planetary Society members helped make one of its sample collectors possible!

Our supporters funded PlanetVac’s first full prototype and its rocket test flight. It’s a Honeybee Robotics sampler that blasts the surface with nitrogen gas and catches what flies up. A version called P-Sampler is now mounted on one of the spacecraft’s landing legs, ready to grab a piece of Phobos.

Good luck on your journey MMX! 🔴

Comet 10P/Tempel Reaches Perihelion (evening)

Comet 10P/Tempel reaches perihelion today, its closest point to the Sun in its orbit, at a distance of 1.42 astronomical units (AU). As the Sun’s radiation heats the comet’s icy nucleus, its outgassing will peak, making this one of ve its glowing coma.

The bright waning gibbous moon will constitute a challenge tonight. It will wash out the faint, diffuse light of the comet.

Your best observing window is during the brief period of complete darkness right after evening twilight ends, just before the moon rises (roughly 9:30 PM to 10:30 PM for mid-northern latitudes).

Use high contrast viewing techniques to improve your experience. These techniques include draping a dark cloth or observing hood over your head to block out ambient glare and relying on “averted vision” — looking slightly to the side of the comet rather than directly at it to engage the highly sensitive peripheral cells in your retina.

Don’t expect a bright, sweeping tail like in the movies. In a small telescope, Comet 10P will look like a faint, grayish smudge or a fuzzy, out-of-focus star. Tap your telescope tube lightly; the slight vibration will help your eye detect the faint, fuzzy patch of the comet against the background stars.

If you are observing while the moon is up, physically block the moonlight. Position your telescope so that a house, garage, or large tree hides the moon from your direct line of sight. Protecting your eyes’ dark adaptation is critical for spotting faint cometary fuzz.

🌔 Sky Tonight, Apr 29: look SE after sunset for the Moon. Spica sits ~3° left : about two fingers at arm’s length.

🐦‍⬛To the Moon’s right, spot constellation Corvus the Crow, a sail-shaped 4-star pattern.

😲Wow: Spica’s light traveled ~250 years to reach you!
