IN DETAIL: Investors traded N110bn shares on NGX — up by 12.9%

The Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) says investors exchanged 2.02 billion shares worth N110.77 billion in 173,113 deals in the week ended October 23.

The turnover value rose from N98.09 billion recorded in the 6 billion shares were traded in 184,632 deals.

According to the NGX weekly market report, trading volume increased by 22 percent, while the value increased by 12.9 percent.

Kamene Okonjo, mother of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), has died at the age of 96.

Kamene Okonjo, a professor of sociology and advocate for women’s rights, died on Friday, according to reports ed by the Umu Obi Obahai royal family of Ogwashi-Uku kingdom in Delta state.

HURIWA asks IGP to order unannounced police station inspections over alleged extortion

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on Tunji Disu, inspector-general of police (IGP), to order unannounced inspections of police stations nationwide over rs extort money from detainees and their relatives to secure bail.

In a statement on Sunday, signed by Emmanuel Onwubiko, its national coordinator, HURIWA said the police leadership must go beyond public declarations that bail is free and take concrete steps to address alleged extortion.

The association also urged the police chief to establish a dedicated complaints line in his office to enable Nigerians to report extortion, arbitrary arrests, unlawful detention and other forms of police misconduct.

NCDC: Two suspected Ebola cases identified so far — one of them is unconfirmed

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) says it is investigating a suspected case of Ebola virus disease in Rivers state, following confirmation of an earlier case involving a e Idris, director-general of the NCDC, spoke at a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday, saying the case in Rivers state had yet to be confirmed.

He said the centre had identified 53 primary contacts and was monitoring people who may have been exposed to the confirmed case.

“We have established two suspected cases and 53 primary contact links. They are primary contacts. We have an isolation centre and a quarantine centre,” Idris said.
