The second is unfair trade. If you’re subsidizing China—or anyone—and you subsidize their cars and batteries, anyone who tries to compete is going to get sunk because of those subsidies.
You should counter that. You can counter it with quotas. You can counter it with tariffs. Perfectly fine, as long as there’s a reason for it.
But I’m not a tariff guy in general. I don’t think, in general, it’s a great idea.”
Once again, as always, I agree with Jamie here. I think for most miscellaneous goods tariffs are unneeded and come at a cost to consumers. But there’s truth to protecting national security and critical industries. We cannot be reliant on strategic adversaries for many critical components, not only to our economy, but to everyday lives.
