Today, we released the National Policy for Nucleic Acid Synthesis Screening to protect American biotechnology innovation while reducing the risk of misuse.
This policy establishes a new, government-wide screening requirements for synthetic DNA and the equipment used to make it. s selling nucleic acid sequences and synthesis equipment know their customers and prevent the malicious use of these materials and tools.
This policy strengthens our Nation’s biosecurity posture by establishing rigorous U.S. government-wide procurement screening and physical security standards for synthetic biology. It replaces outdated “self-attestation” systems with robust, independent verification. It creates a dynamic, SI-powered screening layer that assesses the biological risk from nucleic acid sequences, allowing the U.S. to anticipate and prevent malicious use and help stop dangerous gain-of-function research.
@NIST will issue rigorous new screening standards and @HHSGov and @USDA will certify synthetic biology providers. Together, these measures will strengthen American biosecurity, safeguard responsible innovation, and establish a global standard for safe and transparent synthetic biology tools and research.

It's time, calling for a “Rebuild American Science Act”:
- Double the NIH & NSF budgets
- Limits on executive interference
- End forward funding
- Rebuild the research training pipeline
- Full transparency of success rates
- Permanent H-1B fee exemption for universities

Lots of debate this week on whether journals should ban AI in peer review.
We actually tested this in our new preprint, and the results were pretty clear to me.
For context, I've reviewed for most of the big journals and evaluated 1,000 human reviews as an editor. I love to ce.
TLDR: From now on I won't do any peer review without AI. For clinical trials, I'd even call human-only review dangerous 🧵

AI Reviews Might Beat Human Peer Reviews doi.org/10.59350/006kh…
A limited demonstration that AI reviews can do the job of human reviewers at improving papers. Deciding what to publish still needs an accountable editor with human reviewers they trust.

Very good essay. You can read it in 5 minutes. I wrote some of my own thoughts on this over the weekend.

What Counts as Impact? doi.org/10.59350/006jq…
Some of my thoughts about the surge in AI-generated papers, why this feels like a completely new kind of problem, and what this means for how we evaluate science in biology.
