It’s by no means the first time the King has said this sort of thing. Queen Victoria’s consort, Prince Albert, said something similar in 1840. But it does not go far enough for those who want reparations.

The King has directly addressed the “great suffering” caused by the historic slave trade in the Caribbean.

Speaking within two hours of landing in the Bahamas, the King celebrated the country’s culture while recognising that some of it was “born out of darkness”.

A lively welcome for Charles to Clifford Park, where the King met young Bahamians at the Future Bahamas youth rally and exhibition. Outside the rally, a group of protestors held placards which read “Pay us what you owe” and “reparations now”.

The King addressed the thorny issue of slavery and reparations within hours of landing in the Bahamas saying: ‘It is only right that we should acknowledge the great suffering of the past, in these islands and beyond.’
Although he stopped short of offering an apology or financial th government policy, aides say His Majesty will ‘not shy away’ from addressing the subject this week. He got a warm and very joyful welcome at a youth rally in Nassau (with around 20 protestors outside) 🇧🇸

On Mountain Rescue Awareness Day, we send our heartfelt thanks to all those who volunteer their time and expertise to keep people safe in some of our most beautiful but challenging landscapes.

Through our connection with this remarkable organisation, we have seen first-hand the lism and compassion that define their work.

Meeting local mountain rescue teams during the Three Peaks Challenge this summer was an opportunity to say thank you in person for the vital role they play in keeping walkers and climbers safe on the mountains all year round.

We are incredibly proud to support the extraordinary volunteers who respond in all conditions, often at a moment’s notice, to help others when they need it most. To everyone across the mountain rescue community, thank you for your unwavering commitment, courage and service.

‘I love it, the family love it. Charlotte and Louis are obsessed with it.  It’s really good telly.’
Asked if he ever fantasised about doing anything other than being King one day, he says, “I did want to be a policeman when I was younger, I thought I could make a good one.  And then I went through a phase of wanting to be a DJ – I wasn’t very good.”
