The BBC has agreed to pay £400,000 to an award-winning Jewish documentary-maker who alleged she was subjected to antisemitism and pushed out of the corporation after October 7.

Lucie Kon, 57, spent 22 years at the BBC and worked on programmes including Panorama, Today, BBC e. Films she commissioned or helped produce won an Oscar, Emmy and Bafta.

Kon says her treatment changed dramatically after the Hamas attacks. She alleges colleagues described Zionists like her as “evil”, argued that Israel should be called terrorist if Hamas was, and told her to consider what had driven Hamas to carry out the massacre.

When she proposed a documentary about October 7, Kon says she was told she was “too partial” to oversee it because she was Jewish.

She subsequently filed a formal grievance, but a BBC investigation rejected her complaint. Kon says she was then kept away from work for months. During a restructuring, her position was made redundant and she failed to secure the similar role replacing it.

She launched unfair-dismissal proceedings.

The BBC has now agreed substantial compensation, reported as £400,000, without admitting liability or accepting that Kon suffered antisemitism.

Kon says Jewish employees still at the corporation continue to face hostility and feel unable to identify openly as Jewish or Zionist.

Big: Erdoğan’s chief advisor Oktay Saral who attacked Azerbaijan’s restrictions on Islamic garb at government schools gets the boot. Azerbaijan wanted heads to roll. Erdogan caved. Aliyev will likely attend the Oct. 30 Turkic summit in Istanbul now.

Reports on Brazilian TV of terrible chaos. Polling stations that had already closed their doors, reopening. Poll clerks completely confused. What a nightmare. Hard to say what the consequences might be, tonight and in the weeks and months ahead.

Saddam Haftar arrived suddenly in Cairo !

Egypt’s long-term support for the Haftar family was never charity — it was a strategic investment in a stable eastern Libya that protected Egyptian borders and interests.

For years, Cairo provided political cover, military training, logistical backing, and diplomatic shielding to Khalifa Haftar and his sons while others isolated them. That support helped the LNA survive and consolidate in the east.

Now the same family has engineered the ratification of the 2019 Turkey-Libya maritime deal — an agreement Egypt has repeatedly called null, void, and a direct infringement on its exclusive economic zone.

The move is widely seen in Cairo as a deliberate pivot to leverage Turkish influence in western Libya for Saddam’s political ambitions, under a U.S.-linked power-sharing formula.

Saddam’s sudden arrival in Cairo is damage control, not partnership.

Egypt’s anger is not theatrical. It is the reaction of a state that backed the Haftars when it was costly, only to watch them trade that support for a deal that undercuts Egyptian sovereignty in the Mediterranean.

Egypt justifiably considers Libya and particularly Eastern Libya its zone of influence

Loyalty has a price. So does abandoning it.

This should clear the way for Aliyev to attend the OTS summit in Ankara. A pragmatic move by Erdoğan.

Had the rift continued, the Organization of Turkic States risked being eclipsed by C6 — the five Central Asian states plus Azerbaijan, without Türkiye.

Now reading @simonmontefiore book. Jerusalem.

Coffee , cake, nice hotel, seducing my mind to read more and ⏩.

AD 70 P 6
"Titus entourage was filled with Jewish renegades including the ruler three Jerusalemites - a historian, a king and (it seems) a double Queen was sharing torian was Titus advisor Josephus a rebel Jewish commander who had defected to the Romans and who is the sole souls of this account.

The King was Herod Agrippa II, a very Roman Jew, brought up at the court of emperor Claudius;

he had been the supervisor of the Jewish Temple built by his great-grandfather Herod the great,

and often resided he needs Jerusalem Palace, even though he ruled disparate territories across the north of modern Israel, Syria and Lebanon.

The King was almost certainly accompanied by his sister, Bernice daughter of a Jewish monarch, and twice a Queen by marriage, who had recently become Titus mistress.

Her Roman enemies later denounced her as the "Jewish Cleopatra".

She was around 40 but "she was in our best years and at the height of her beauty', noted Josephus.

At the start of the rebellion, she and her brother who lived together (incestuously claimed their enemies), had attempted to face down the rebels in the last appeal to reason.

Now these three Jews helplessly watched the "death agony of a famous city"- Bernice did so from the bed of its destroyer.

‘Montefiore hits paydirt again with this engaging and thoughtful history…. The reader enjoys the ride. The massive scope of this book and the vividness of the story virtually cry out for a video series exploring the themes Montefiore has set out. In fact, it would be surprising if a video series were not already being storyboarded. It would be an immediate hit, in this reviewer’s view, with a huge audience.”
