falling fertility around the world,including india,has brought demographics right at the centre of development debate. @elonmusk once described “demographics as destiny”. investing in human resources continues to be a challenge and priority,at multiple level,for governments back aiims had installed a population clock in its premises which was easily visible at the intersection. it fell into disuse and i am happy to see it back in action.but crossing it always makes one thoughtful.

we in india are adding 23.07 million (2.3 crores) to our population every year,ie,43.89 new lives every minute.our nearest competitor china adds 8.71 million ( 87 lakhs) a year,ie,16.57 every minute.
our population is projected to continue rising until 2061-62,reaching a peak of ~ 1.7 billion ( 170 crores) before the gradual decline sets in.

this happens to me often.i work hard ,clear my doubts and prepare a framework to explain.then I explain with great effort.and then I find that I have not been able to communicate effectively.the person tells me something else.i take comfort in the fact that it’s an ancient o bad at explaining.

a time series graph depicting the way americans are consuming music.understandably ,audio-tapes and vinyl records (many in the current generation wouldn’t h even have heard of it ) have become passé.but permanent downloads have also walked into oblivion. audio streaming has been eartening to see that music has once again become community driven enjoyment.people are going for live entertainment and feeling the pleasure of enjoying it with others even in the age of technology induced loneliness.perhaps,the quality of sound in a live concert is also catalysing the trend.we in india,too,need to do surveys of this kind to keep a tab on changing social mores and consumption.
