In the quiet village of Oakhaven, nestled between two misty mountains, lived an old craftsman named Silas. Silas was known throughout the valley for making lanterns, but not just any kind—his lanterns burned without oil or candle wax.

Instead, Silas collected memories.

Every evening at twilight, villagers who carried heavy hearts would walk up the winding stone path to his tiny shop. A mother grieving a distant child, a farmer who had lost his harvest, or a boy terrified of the dark—they all came to Silas.

Silas would offer them a small glass vial and a cup of warm chamomile tea. "Speak the memory into the vial," he would whisper softly. "Give me the weight of it, just for a little while."

When the visitor spoke, their breath would fog inside the glass, glowing with a soft, iridescent light. Silas would seal the vial and place it delicately inside a handcrafted brass lantern.

The magic was simple: as long as the lantern hung outside the villager's home, their burden felt lighter. The memory wasn't erased—it was just softened, turned into a comforting amber glow that lit up the dark mountain nights.

One cold autumn evening, a young girl named Eliana arrived at the shop. Unlike the others, she brought no glass vial. Her hands were empty, and her eyes were filled with anger.

"I don't want to leave a memory," Eliana declared, her voice trembling. "I want to take one away forever. I want to forget the night my house burned down."

Silas sighed gently and set down his tools. "A lantern cannot destroy a memory, child. It can only hold it so you don't have to carry it alone in the dark."

"Then it's useless!" she cried, turning to leave.

"Wait," Silas said, stepping out from behind his workbench. He reached for a lantern hanging in the center of the room. It was older than the rest, glowing with a warm, steady golden light that cast long, comforting shadows on the wooden walls.

"This was the very first lantern I ever made," Silas said softly. "It holds the memory of the night I lost my brother at sea."

Eliana stopped, looking at the glowing brass frame. "Doesn't it hurt to see it every day?"

"It did at first," Silas admitted. "I built the lantern hoping to hide the sadness away. But over time, I realized something. The sadness was only part of the light. The rest of the glow was the love I had for him."

He handed the lantern's handle to Eliana. As her fingers wrapped around the warm brass, the sharp edge of her anger began to soften.

"If we erase the hard memories," Silas continued, "we risk erasing the strength we gained by surviving them. The light doesn't hide the dark—it just shows us the way through it."

Eliana held the lantern for a long time, watching the soft golden light flicker against the cool night air. For the first time in months, her chest felt light enough to take a deep breath.

She didn't ask to forget her home that night. Instead, she asked Silas to teach her how to build lanterns of her own. And together, they kept the lights burning bright across the valley.

He wants to kiss her so badly that he sometimes has to look away when she smiles at him. But she has made it clear that she wants to wait until marriage.

And the beautiful, painful part?
He never makes her feel guilty for it.
"You have no idea what you do to me," he whispered.

She looked up at him. "Then tell me."
He laughed without humor, rubbing his face. "I'm trying to be the kind of man you can trust with your heart, and you're making it very difficult to remember that I'm a man with a heart of my own."
