Compositor just hit 100k downloads!!!

I turned my TV into a Game Boy Color with a Pokemon town as my home screen. Walk into a building to open an app. Want to change a setting? Beat the gym leader first. Opus 5.5 is the goat.

Turns out a lot of people wanted a Mac image editor with no subscription.

75,000 downloads in 3 weeks. Thank you!

I built a Photoshop-like image editor. It’s called Compositor.

robbietilton.com/compositor

I originally built it for myself to get off my Adobe subscription, but decided to release it for free and make it open source. It has all the essential tools I need for compositing, with none workflow is kind of archaic in 2026, but I’m still using it until AI can actually get pixel-perfect on some of the details.

The entire app is 12MB. Photoshop is 6,455MB on my machine.

Compositor (v1.4) is out! This update brings big GPU performance improvements throughout the app. Frames render 10x faster, it handles large files with ease, and everything feels buttery smooth. And the app is now just 11MB.

lots of ppl keep asking for Windows/Linux versions. A bunch of people have already forked and built ports! I don't have those machines so I haven't tested any. Once the community settles on one, I'll link to the best one for each system, but I'll only be maintaining the Mac version

I used to think the term 'prompt engineer' was stupid. A self-aggrandizing title for a skill that didn’t really exist

But as time has gone on, I'm starting to think prompting will be the only job left. It will be less about 'how' to prompt, but knowing what and why to prompt.

My theory on Google’s strategy:

Gemini doesn’t need to be the best chatbot. It has distribution through Google and Apple.

Demis would rather cure diseases than battle on marginally differentiated chat product.

The public will think Google is asleep at the wheel, but then will come out of left field with a major medical breakthrough in early 2027

Breakthroughs in science will prove to be the better business model. Once a drug is discovered, every dose doesn’t require additional compute.

Turned out to be a simple fix: an A/B FFC cable to flip the display pinout.

Now I can use this EVT board to bring up the firmware and start building the software
