24-year-old Coast Guard rescue swimmer Josh Law spent about two hours battling darkness and 6- to 8-foot waves on October 16, rescuing 16 people after their boat capsized roughly 140 miles off Mexico’s Baja California coast. Responding to a 1 a.m. distress call, a four-person helicopter crew departed Air Station Ventura, with Lt. Miyako Miller piloting. Law was the only rescuer in the water, guided by the helicopter’s searchlight as he towed survivors to a basket for individual hoists, even as his dry suit filled with water. With fuel running low, the crew flew to San Diego while Law treated three injured survivors; some wounds were described as consistent with shark bites. All 16 survivors were Mexican nationals and were taken to hospitals, with two initially reported in critical condition. An estimated 11 others remained missing when authorities suspended the search on October 18 after U.S. and Mexican teams covered more than 2,441 square miles over a combined 89 search hours. The boat’s purpose and the circumstances of its sinking remained under federal investigation; suspected smuggling had not been confirmed.
