My article for @BBCSport on the rise of inverted full-backs. With the help of a special guest: Philipp Lahm. It was an honour to tap into the mind of the greatest full-back I’ve seen play the sport 🐐

Mad that so many people tried to make Thierry into some kind of villain. Obvious that his delivery was just too blunt/deadpan (because he’s not used to this type of presenting role) when he was delivering his jokes rather than there being any malice towards Yamal or Kate Abdo.

The worst bit about this is Lionel Messi didn’t even receive the golden ball in the world cup. 38/39 and was clearly and obviously the best player for the duration of the World cup & they got it wrong.
Premier League, Champions League and the World Cup were the 3 highest levels of competition last season. The two players with the highest performance level in those competitions were Kvaratskhelia and Messi.

Everybody is harsh with their criticism after the event but a very small % of people were criticising things like spending £140m on Europa League attackers who are limited in what they can do (was so obvious Mbeumo is just a pure transition threat if you just watched his Brentford goals and that Cunha is a big fish in small pond type of player who thinks he is better than he is). Unless you have a consistent base of criticism I find it hard to take criticism after the event when it doesn’t work seriously.
🚨🎙️ - Gary Neville CALLS OUT the Manchester United board after the loss:

“It's 14 years now without a Premier League title. That will be another 5 or 10 before you know it because there are other clubs set up for success and Manchester United are NOT.

“They are making poor ess perspective, this is really damaging. It CANNOT just be the manager again.

“There has got to be consequences ABOVE that. You can't keep letting the people pick the manager who keep getting it WRONG.”

Don’t really care if Aymeric Laporte cost £40m or whatever. The risk/reward of spending that money to re-create a World Cup winning partnership was so obviously a deal that Barcelona should have done.

Flick needs to find a better plan to press Valverde. Being left to free and he’s finding switches or drills between the lines to escape the high press. Impressive range from RB so far.

Barcola works like an animal off-the-ball. Probably his least talked about trait. Stopped a Brighton transition at 0-0. He’s not this superstar primadonna that you would associate with £100m+ attackers. Quite the opposite.

Matty F has done an excellent job shielding defensively. Good call from RDZ to put Fernandes as the shielder instead of Tonali, Fernandes is better positionally. And Kudus has been an absolute rock at making the ball stick in the final third.

Anderson does not defend or pass with the calmness that I want as England’s 6. Unfortunately think Tuchel will pick him. But I’d rather Alex Scott was there alongside Rice & Jude.

Boubacar Kamara is so good. Doesn’t even make France squads when there is a shout for him to be their starting 6. Very press resistant and an excellent reader of the game. He looks like the best midfielder on the pitch.

Makes sense.
99.999% of footballers cry about a foul. There’s something so perfectly old school about his mentality.

Not quite sure how João Neves kept the ball... 🧐

Declan Rice you don. Stops the transition at one end then bangs one in at the other end. Sums him up. WORLD CLASS.

Kane might be best in big matches without any other creators in the team and just having pure runners to find around him.

This sense of inevitability that Kane has every time he loads up that right foot to pass…
