Well put, Andrew.
The “blue wave” that brought the Conservatives to power was in fact the tide going out on David Eby’s NDP government #bcpoli thetyee.ca/News/2026/10/2…

Indicates a federal direction that is in the opposite direction of the incoming BC Conservative government which plans to revoke the provincial Declaration of Indigenous Rights Act.
I can't say that I had this on my radar for the federal government, particularly after several early missteps with First Nations. This type of effort is more likely to fail than succeed, but bravo to all involved for showing the courage to open the conversation.

@nspector4 Always amazing many political talking heads simply don't understand the Conservative/Liberal coalition that was forged 70 years ago, and is now likely reformulating.
It's a political cycle unique to B.C.

The @Conservative_BC actually received 50,000 fewer votes than in 2024 (but won 20 more seats) because the @bcndp vote dropped by 275.000 (29%) while the @BCGreens got 23,000 more votes than last time (+13%) - still some ballots to be counted.
Voter turnout in BC dropped substantially in this election - down from 58.45% in 2024 to 48.06% (previous low was 53.86% in the 2020 pandemic election). Advance voting was also down 11% Lots of likely causes but approx 300,000 voters stayed away compared with last time.

Big congratulations Rob!
I'm thrilled to share that I've been named the CRC in Institutions, Inequality, & Economic Policy. I'm enormously grateful to U of T & the Government of Canada for placing their trust in me & supporting research to better understand Indigenous economies. rotman.utoronto.ca/news-events-an…

Fuzzy slogans that do not indicate actual outcomes for those in poverty.
On International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we recognize the experiences of people living in poverty.

That’s why our province is fostering better outcomes for people experiencing poverty. 👇

Additional context: 4 of 5 jobs in BC are in private sector. Public sector jobs include teachers and other educators, health care providers and social services staff for seniors & others in our communities. The sectors are interconnected. Prosperity effects flow multiple ways.
The basis of our prosperity begins with a strong private sector economy. Since 2019, B.C. private sector jobs grew 3.3%. Public sector jobs grew 46.4%.

Autonomy to do what? To address what issues and needs, rights and duties, problems and plans? For whom?
Who are the “we” in this referenda?👇🏼
Are we going to stay united as a movement? That’s a question each one of us is going to have to ask and ask our friends and our neighbours,” says Smith.
“Knowing I have a different pathway to get autonomy than some of the others are proposing, is that the better pathway to achieve more autonomy?”

Many, perhaps most, of the undecided voters in the BC provincial election will likely make a decision in the final day or so of the campaign if they wait to cast a ballot on election day. A dynamic final week!
“The Conservatives are holding a narrow two-point lead among decided voters, the Leger data suggests. Meanwhile, there is growing support for the two leading parties, but a significant share of voters are open to changing their minds before they go to the polls on Oct. 24.”

While a part of democratic politics is always about perceptions and emotions, including real and imagined grievances, the concrete specifics of everyday issues in Alberta and elsewhere in Canada will be the major topics and interests of most people.
New today: Alberta Referendum: ‘Remain’ continues to lead by a wide margin but few believe separation issue will end on Oct. 19

No amount of support for Russia can end the war, because Russia is the criminal aggressor. A modicum of support for Ukraine could, however, end the war, by making it impossible for Russia to continue. This should not be a hard choice.

Zelenskyy stressed that stopping Russian ballistic launches would force Vladimir Putin to negotiate, rendering further energy strikes unnecessary.

PM Carney offers an alternative conception of confederation and current intergovernmental relations in Canada to that of AB Premier Smith
Mark Carney: "Canada was never merely a bargain struck between provinces. It was never a series of transactions of gives and gets of gross and net. Canada is a promise that is so much greater than the sum of its parts."

This discussion on DRIPA is just painful in the #BCLeadersDebate. The conflation of DRIPA and the Cowichan Decision in the framing of the debate question and the subsequent discussion is just wildly off base.

@NZNationalParty A program of drug testing welfare recipients in Florida in 2011 operated for 4 months before legislation was overturned. Of the 4,086 people tested, 2.6 per cent tested positive, mostly marijuana. The estimated program cost was $118,140, which was $45,000 more than the savings.

Would it blow everyone’s mind that 60% of doctors have a Medical Professional Corporations (MPCs) to access a lower small business tax rate? In BC, that tax rate is 11% up to $500k.

High-income earners always use the tax code to prevent a full tax bracket assessment. #bcpoli

Valuable reminder of overall tax profile for provinces
Additional context regarding BC tax rates: across all major revenue sources, the province is the second lowest tax jurisdiction in Canada overall. Roughly 17% below the national average.
