Now THIS is the kind of thread's I would like to see more often.
I'm not the first person to note that our understanding of ourselves and our society is heavily influenced by technological change - think of how we analogized biological and social functions to clockwork, then steam engines, then computers.

I once asked Rod what he thought of Hungarian Turanism — he’d never heard of it

How was he a right wing intellectual in Hungary getting paid by taxes with THIS blind spot of Hungarian RW history?

I realized then Hungary was only a means to his end, le epic Europe. Szia szia Rod
Friend just reminded me I reposted fake news (that I fell for) abt Peter Magyar before election. I’d forgotten. I was dumb to believe it & repost. I apologize. Moving soon, but I love Hungary & its ppl, and wish the incoming PM good luck serving this great land.

Radio Svoboda just dropped a bombshell investigation based on previously unpublished Russian military radio intercepts from the Kyiv offensive, March 2022.

Key findings:

As we all knew, the “goodwill gesture” was a lie.

Russian units began withdrawing from Kyiv Oblast as early as March 25–26 — days before Moscow announced a pullback at the Istanbul talks on March 29. The intercepts and a recovered soldier’s diary confirm it was a battlefield retreat, not diplomacy.

As we also knew, Bucha was organized.

The 64th Motorized Rifle Brigade (Col. Omurbekov, callsign “Zveno”) ran systematic clearing ops in Bucha and Irpin. A subordinate testified Omurbekov personally ordered killing civilians found with phones and firing on evacuation vehicles. He was later made a Hero of Russia.

War crimes on tape.

Intercepts capture orders to detain, blindfold, and “interrogate” civilians. One exchange ends with a soldier responding to an order to question detainees: “Just kill the fuckers.”

Total disorganization.

Vehicles stalling, weapons failing, artillery hitting their own troops, commanders screaming at subordinates silent for 35 minutes. One officer threatened to bury his gun crew in a field over an 800-meter targeting error.

Looting was systematic and acknowledged.

Soldiers openly admitted stealing food and property from villages. A Russian military doctor from Buryatia filmed himself doing it.

Scorched-earth retreat.

As they pulled back, Russian forces shelled towns and villages indiscriminately to cover the withdrawal — one officer ordered all remaining ammo expended. Those units were then redeployed to the east and south.

Sophisticated drones attacked the US base where we store the nuclear bombers…

The drones:

* Had non-commercial signals
* Were resistant to jamming
* Came in waves of 12-15
* Swept over sensitive areas of the base
* Had long range control links
* Were more advanced than anything seen in Ukraine (Russian drones)
* Beyond Iranian capabilities

Over the multiple days of incursion, local residents heard explosions which Barksdale claimed was “weapons testing”

This is the second base incursion of a sensitive site IN THE US in the last 2 weeks.
This should be the biggest story in the country right now.

Barksdale is the HQ for our B52 nuclear bombers, it's where Bush sheltered on 9/11, and the drones are reported as "far more sophisticated than anything seen in Ukraine ... and well beyond Iranian capabilities."

Optical-wire guided FPV, a technology developed in Russia and pioneered in the battlefield during the Kursk campaign of 2024.
Remember how we were all told not to overlearn the lessons of Ukraine because the U.S. in any real will have instant air supremacy, precision weapons galore, and won’t have to worry about those little drone things?
For the first time, an Iranian-backed militia has carried out an FPV drone attack in Iraq, an incredibly dangerous new development.

Seen here, the FPV munition flies around Victory Base near Baghdad International Airport before slamming into a building.

From Kupyansk to Zap we now have cases of drone-assault units having success. There are different approaches. But drone-enabled mechanized assault is working on making a comeback.
@TBrit90 @gepardtatze The counterattack in Zaporizhzhia starting last month showed that you can conduct offensive operations if you can locate and suppress UAV positions. New countermeasures + proper planning and preparation can set the conditions for successful mechanized assaults.

Russia has openly self-defined the US as Russia's adversary for decades. US strategy must call a spade and spade and proceed from the simple fact that Russia is a US adversary.

Detailed in Woodward's book "War"
Former U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken:

In the days after the October 7th attack on Israel, the Israelis were insisting that in the north, Hezbollah from Lebanon was about to attack and they wanted to strike preemptively against Hezbollah.

And Biden said, look, we will efending Israel if you're attacked, but we're not there if you're going to start something.

We came within about 30 minutes of having a war in the north based on bad information that the Israelis had about an imminent attack from Hezbollah, and we were able to avert that.

Ok, so the Hungarian situation completely spiralled. First, Orban is not alright and that much has been clear for a long time now. Second, his opponent Madyar’s statements in support of Orban are anticipated: it’s a normal political move in such a situation. Third, I want everyone to understand that while Zelenskyy did the right thing by cutting off the pipeline, now is the time to tone down. Orban can do whatever he wants: threaten Ukraine, cry in agony, etc but the man’s level of toxicity is absolutely unparalleled. He really is eyeing the prospect of losing these elections, and it’s truly important that he succeeds in that but just don’t fan the flames at this point

I saw this quote for the first time yesterday: “Someone dies in combat. At Brigade level, he’s a social security number and a status that gets tracked to Landstuhl. At Div, he’s a storyboard. At Corps, he’s a statistic. At Platoon and Company, he’s a gaping wound in the soul of 100 men. To his family, it’s the end of the world." -Jim Gourley

When I was a USAF special ops pilot in Iraq and Afghanistan, I would return to base after missions and have a chance to let down my guard. I'd hit the gym, grab a Subway sandwich or a Burger King burger, and maybe stop by my squadron's plywood hut to watch a movie and hang out with friends.

As a war reporter in Ukraine I experienced a very different kind of war. A war with no safe places. A war in which you are in contact with the enemy 24/7, and you can die at any time.

In the early years (dating back to 2014), artillery and MLRS were the main threats. And while terrifying, the danger from these weapons was largely mathematical. There are certain actions you can take that, statistically speaking, will probably keep you alive during a barrage.

Drones changed the calculus.

With drones, it feels like you're being hunted. Survival isn't about the odds any more, it's about being better than the human operator of that drone trying to kill you.

The psychological toll of such constant proximity to death — living in lethal danger for weeks and months on end — is unfamiliar to many American veterans of my generation. It certainly was for me when I first experienced trench warfare in Ukraine more than a decade ago.

Yet, this will be closer to the norm for Americans in future wars.

What we've seen so far from Iran is just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. Against an adversary such as China, we will no longer enjoy the safe spaces we got used to in our post-9/11 wars.

Traditional air dominance — created by manned warplanes — will no longer be enough to protect us from drone and missile threats.

Our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines will be in contact with the enemy 24/7, even if they are physically divorced from the front line of fighting.

In short: we need to think about survivability in ways we never did during the GWOT era.

As a King's College London-trained War Studies PhD, I want to point out that in the field of organized human conflict, one can often be saved by one's opponent being even more stupid than oneself. Often, having a terrible plan is offset by an opponent having a more terrible plan.

This 'relative stupidity index' is much under-served in the strategic studies literature, which often focuses on highlights in strategic acumen (see "Makers of Modern Strategy " (Ed. Paret)), as opposed to the more common phenomenon of competing nadirs of strategic incompetence.

We should more often ask ourselves: which one-legged man would win in an arse-kicking contest?
A strategic masterstroke to drag Lebanon into a war that no one in Lebanon wants to join, at a moment when you are weak militarily and isolated at home, with a totally ineffective first strike

I still say the Russian MoD is killing Telegram use in Russia because Putin is afraid Telegram will be used as a means to organize a Russian Army Coup attempt.
Some Rus TG channels run by volunteers and soldiers are openly criticizing those who depended on Telegram: “We had similar convos two years ago. You all had two years to prepare alternative comms and teach that to your soldiers and commanders. If you were too lazy or thick headed outage that impacts your ops is on you.” t.me/Ne_Donskoy/5248
