Chief Secretary to the Treasury is right: employers are not working people, they exploit working people, profiting off their labour.

Pic unrelated.
'I don't think employers are working people.'

@CamillaTominey grills Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Emma Reynolds MP, over whether Labour has breached its manifesto pledge in the Budget.

speaking of current debates: one of my many problems with it is the lack of follow through

should we compensate for atrocities which happened in the past? maybe! how long ago should we go? how do we attribute the gain to currently living? and we better do this for *everything* and not just whatever's on the agenda today - I'm still waiting for reparations from the UK for growing up in communist Poland

should people pay their "fair share" of taxes? maybe! how much is enough? how do you determine fairness? just saying the magic phrase and raising taxes is dumb as fuck
sentences which may provoke aneurysm in one happy brain:

"government doesn't spend your money, it creates new money. your tax money is destroyed"

"blah blah blah class struggle"

"we don't want people to pay the cost, we want government to pay the cost"

"group X needs to pay their *fair share*"

> Therefore, the fight for the emancipation of Africa must be viewed strictly through the lens of class struggle.
Imagine releasing a strongly worded statement to defend your colonial masters against the material interests of your own people.

This is exactly why I constantly warn against reducing colonialism and imperialism to mere skin color. Figures like Kemi are modern-day equivalents of Mobutu Sese Seko and the rest of the comprador elite who oversee and facilitate the destruction of their own ancestral states solely to serve the interests of global capital.

Therefore, the fight for the emancipation of Africa must be viewed strictly through the lens of class struggle. On one side is the African working-class population, who have been condemned to live under engineered economic ruin. On the other side is the bourgeois class, comprising the corrupt African politicians who facilitate the extraction of our wealth, alongside expendable imperial diplomats like Kemi.

Her specific mandate is to justify this historical plunder, gaslight the victims, and reduce the structural devastation of Africa to the supposed moral failings of its people, rather than the deliberate economic strangulation orchestrated by her neo-colonial masters.

never before has judging a book by its cover was as accurate as in this case
The benefits of abundant intelligence will accrue far outside of San Fransisco.

Spent the last year writing about capital, sovereignty, and the coming reordering of economic power.

I'm still marvelling at the EA forum post announcing that Manifund hired Caroline Ellison for a senior position - no, sorry, *announcing she was already working there under pseudonym*

the vibes among ea/rats is "we think from first-principles, we look at reality objectively, we are not constrained by societal norms, therefore we're making better decisions".

moving past the obvious display of hubris, the reasoning for ignoring a common norms is frequently something like "the norm is a heuristic for people who can't reason well, therefore my reasoning overrides the need for the norm"

however! norms like "don't just hire convicted fraudsters to handle money" exist because we empirically know that hiring frauds is a bad idea *particularly when it looks like a good idea to you!"

another part of the post I'm captivated by is hiding the hiring decision (she worked under a pseudonym) and justification of it "I know her and she's a good person"

don't be surprised people react even more negatively if you hire a fraudster, hide it at first and say it's fine *because you're close*

compliance department, if you had one, would've died of stress-induced heart attack. anyone with a functioning brain should consider people making these decisions incapable of maintaining the trust necessary to handle other people's resources.

but sure, you are the chosen ones, you are the people who are immune to all the problems we try to avoid in institutions, you never rationalise bad decisions. it doesn't apply to you, sweetie. you are too smart for that.

there are other reasons which don't require same level of cynicism:

software devs have much less standardised training that any of the other occupations you've mentioned.

"software development" is actually a lot of jobs and we suck and naming and distinguishing between them.
Software devs knows interview tests are stupid. But they can't give them up. Why?

(If you don't like what I am saying, it's because of your ego. Push through.)

1. They don't seem to realize that they are unprofessional.

- Plumbers don't watch each other twist pipes.
- Carpenters don't ask each other to hammer.
- Lawyers don't get mock trials.

2. Ego. It's a hazing, just like a college fraternity. When the company gave software engineers the keys to let someone into their club, the software engineers turned it into a performance exercise.

Why? Let's admit it, software kids:
- You love the power of that position.
- You love making others perform for you.
- You love how smart you feel when you know the answer to your question and others do not.*
- You have the gall to think you "know how they think" within 15 minutes. Both elite coder and elite psychologist - impressive!
- You lack connection and respect that other humans have for each other.
- You are competitive, not cooperative.
- You have neither the guts nor the skill to talk to another human as a human. You put a test between you. It feels safe.

Everyone knows everyone else's tests stinks but yours smells like a rose, right?
Have you ever validated it?
No, you never validated it and you cannot.

Grow up! Be professional.

*In psychology, this is called The Alex Trebeck Effect - the person who knows the answer looks smarter than the guessers. Alex Trebeck didn't even have a college degree. This was tested: 4 candidates played Jeopardy! in front of an audience, rotating into the Alex Trebeck role. The audience rated who was smartest. The host was always rates highest.

More UI innovation from Marius Eriksen. I don't understand it at all, I love it!

mutable.org/manifold

That's not quite true, I understand it, but it's galaxy brain stuff. It feels kind of like Mycroftiv ANTS (Plan 9).
Marius Eriksen evolved Acme into something that can support more "modern" (anti)features!

Finally I can use LLMs in Acme (well, Apex). There is still hope for a bright future.

I keep coming back to a couple of themes and I think it's all somehow connected but I'm struggling to find the connection. help?

- confusing intentions with effects: eg the classic "pass stupid law, say it protects the children (even though it doesn't)"

- disregard of truth, in the sense of not even understanding why others might want to establish truths; acting as if all communication is an act of violence, putting someone down

- lack of engagement with reality. comes in many flavours but magical thinking is common. or acting as if there's no objective world out there.

- jealousy, envy, crab-bucket mentality, entitlement, lack of shame, lack of agency, lack of dreams

where does the corposlop phrase "here at X we blah blah blah"?

it sounds so off. "here we blah blah" or "at X we blah blah" would make sense

the fact that MPs and the Prime Minister himself believes it is worth their time to deal with a private business thinking about winding down is beyond ridiculous and sad

or maybe the best use of @andyburnham many talents is to focus on a chain of discount supermarkets, politics seems too stressful

"if you can't pay workers enough, maybe you shouldn't be in business!"

"ok, I'm going to close down"

"no no no no no, not like that!!!!!!"
Poundland has filed to enter administration, putting 11,000 jobs at risk just weeks before Christmas, including here in Brixton.

I stand with Poundland workers and @UsdawUnion.

The owners must engage with workers and ministers, exploring every option to save jobs and shops.
