“Beauty can be consoling, disturbing, sacred, profane; it can be exhilarating, appealing, inspiring, chilling. It can affect us in an unlimited variety of ways. Yet it is never viewed with indifference: beauty demands to be noticed; it speaks to us directly like the voice of an re are people who are indifferent to beauty, then it is surely because they do not perceive it.”

@oldbooksguyer read too little of bad, or too much of good books: bad books are intellectual poison; they destroy the mind.”
“Reading is merely a surrogate for thinking for yourself; it means letting someone else direct your thoughts. You should read only when your own thoughts dry up, which will of course happen frequently enough even to the best heads; but to banish your own thoughts so as to take up a book is a sin against the holy ghost; it is like deserting untrammeled nature to look at a herbarium or engravings of landscapes.”
Schopenhauer.

Polarity comes from the Greek word "polos", meaning "axis" or "pivot", implying the dynamic tension between opposing yet magnetic forces. While Polaris, derives from the Latin words "stella polaris", or "star of the pole" - a guiding point in the heavens whose perceived stillness has long enabled navigation and orientation amidst sacred tension.
Even more striking is the parallel - the soul craves the chaos of polarity, yet depends on the steadiness of Polaris. Without the former, the spirit withers while the body survives - without the latter, chaos is never transmuted into wisdom, only into disorientation.

Isn't it a little poetic, maybe even quietly beautiful, that polarity - which we are innately drawn to - is so close to the word Polaris?

ultimately "brainrot your user" is not a good business model because brainrotted users won't be making much money over the long-term and therefore won't be worth advertising to. in other news, instagram introduces long-form content on the app-

@oldbooksguyconnectivity problem.
The male brain is wired to convert unexplored territory to explored, and to engage in courtship once he has ammassed what he perceives to be a suitable offering for mate and offspring. “Suitable” meaning compared to what he sees his competitors offering.
The female brain is wired to choose the most competent of these mates.
Phones, TV, Instagram have created a huge problem by making the world much larger.
Now, the male brain is never satisfied because he perceives his offering to be paltry compared to what he sees others achieving online. He also sees the world is so much bigger and so there is always more of the unknown to explore.
The female brain is never satisfied because there is always a more successful potential mate that she thinks is in reach.
The problem is men and women today see too much, and so our internal reproductive optimization algorithm, trained on small villages, is now running on a dataset that is the entire world.

@oldbooksguy A philosophy that is built around negation of the divine cannot ontologically think of reasons for large structures, it can justify them only for other cultural, economic or societal reasons such as commerce, science / technology, education and some other societal endeavour

Few things are more ordinary, or more astonishing, than language.
On February 2, let me show you what a magnificent thing it is that we can speak.
A Way With Words: Why Language Makes Humans Irreplaceable.

I watched Terrence Malick's filmography, wanting to understand how he made locations feel real and tangible. The answer was pretty straightforward: devote precious space and time to showing the details of the world, and they'll feel it.
So I'm going to do that.
So I'm going to do that.
@jholtillus Agree with @PaqWilly . That 2nd page is wonderful, really draws me in.
